This Premier Travel Inn seems quite new - everything inside and out shows little sign of wear. It is located just off the A92 main road that goes from East Dundee to Arbroath adjacent to a new looking middle class housing development. Parking is right in front of the hotel and well lit. Opposite is a little row of shops including general store, pharmacy and Domino Pizza (very pleasant and efficient). Altogether a quiet corner with useful facilities.
Worthy of note in this Travel Inn are the staff on the desk. They are not just efficient in the reception procedure but they have lovely manners and the gentle accent of the Monifieth/Broughty Ferry area Dundonians. I needed to find the locations of a venue and a restaurant for the next day. My information was a bit vague but with the informed help of the young lady receptionist who offered yellow pages and maps we found both places and she even photocopied the section of the map. This was the level of response you expect at the concierge desk of a 5 star hotel but here it was offered with grace beyond one's expectation.
However on my second day I found myself with no towels provided to the room. I only discovered this late as I was running the water for a bath so it was quite annoying. But all was forgiven in view of how well the night receptionist dealt with the complaint - it was a case-study in how to turn around the annoyed guest.
Housekeeping need to attend to the details and particularly the supervisor who should have checked my room was properly done.
Overall though this PTI was a very nice experience and I will certainly stay there again.
To the tourist who knows nothing of the east of Dundee do try to stay another night and check out some of the local gems.
Ask at the desk how to get to Broughty Ferry beach on the estuary of the splendid River Tay- very near - and the lovely little shopping streets of 'The Ferry'. Try the Ship Inn, Fisher Street on the river front just along from the Lifeboat House for an excellent mid price meal using freshly caught East Coast fish. Also the best local fish and chip shop is at the bottom of Gray Street next the small harbour - have the haddock and try the delicacy of a 'white pudding'. Stop in at Allesandro's shop and art gallery also in Gray Street for the most tasteful gifts and if feeling flush a grand print of Scottish scenes by local artists. Almost next to that is Visocchi's Italian Ice Cream Parlour who have been there for ever. Opposite in the same street is a long established high class local baker with cafe - and round corner is Brook Street with a superior coffee shop and delicatessen in Robertson's. All of the above are within 5 to 10 mins of each other and a delightful interlude for any visitor - and all the time the silvery Tay is at the bottom of the street - there is even the Broughty Ferry Castle and small museum very close by..
Nearby also really worth seeing is Arbroath Abbey ( red sand stone impressive ruins and buy some 'smokeys' smoked fish from local fishers houses. Beautiful Glamis Castle (family seat of Queeen Mother's family the Strathmores) about 35 mins away.
Lunan Bay 35 mins - vast beach usually empty and at Auchmithie red sandstone cliffs on the sea.
Only a couple of minutes along the A92 main road from the hotel is a large Dobbies with cafeteria and Angus Gateway souvenir shop and cafe and a few minutes the other way a big Sainsbury's. The Travel Inn has a restaurant right next to it that I did not try but everything else above I did and recommend with confidence.
