“Beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

My girlfriend and I stayed here for a short visit to Dundee at the end of 2013. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and the staff exceptionally friendly. We made use of the spa facilities both on the evening of our stay and before checking out and found them at both times to be in very good condition.

We spent a large portion of the evening of our stay in the bar downstairs and found the food to be excellent and the staff very attentive.

Highly recommend getting a room at the front of the hotel which gives a view over City Quay and also the Unicorn rather than to the rear which is currently something of a building site (but will look fantastic once the regeneration work in Dundee is complete).

Will more than likely stay again as this place was wonderful - and you get a rubber duck!

This is a centrally-located and modern hotel in Dundee's harbour area, close to the Tay Bridge and overlooking City Quay. There is plenty parking alongside, free for guests.

We stayed on the fifth floor, looking out onto the Quay and over the city. It was a well-appointed and spacious room, with shower and bath, good toiletries, minibar, safe, etc. I think it was the grade above a 'standard' room.

Although the heating in the room could be adjusted, it seemed difficult to get the right balance and the room got very warm during the night.

The leisure centre facilities were very good. Nice swimming pool, steam room, sauna and hot tubs. We didn't use the spa or gym but they looked very good. All facilities, aside from spa treatments, were included in room price.

Breakfast choice was good. However, like previous reviewers, we also found that the hot breakfast foods (bacon, sausages, beans, haggis, etc.) were not being stored in an effective heated fashion and the food was only warm by the time one got back to one's table. If this is remarked upon so regularly, why doesn't the hotel management do something about the issue?

Staff were all very pleasant and attentive.

We paid the dinner-bed-and-breakfast rate one night but would not do so again. It was the only significant disappointment of our two-night stay. The fixed menu main course choices were poor. Two fish choices, one chicken and one vegetarian. Not exactly much to select from. The bar prices seemed good but I thought the wine menu bottles were over-priced.

But, one or two niggles aside, we were very satisfied with our visit and would certainly consider returning.

The shopping areas of Dundee city centre are just a few minutes walk away, as is the 'Discovery' research vessel and exhibition centre. Rail and bus stations are also within walking distance. Be aware, though, that the area is under renovation and considerable road re-alingments. This results in driving and traffic being very difficult at times.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights between Xmas and New Year 2013 and overall it was a decent hotel,in a good spot with good facilities and free parking.
There are lots of restaurants, bars, and shops nearby all within walking distance.
We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the food was very good and reasonably priced, but after getting the bill I noticed that they were trying to charge me for someone else's cocktails, so make sure you check your bill.
The room we had was a superior deluxe which was quite large with great views over the Quay and well equipped, but we did have to call reception to tell them that there were no bathrobes or slippers in the room when there should have been. Also the room could have been a bit cleaner and didn't look like it had a decent hoover or dusting for the 3 days we were there.
As there are new hotels opening soon in the same area very soon, this hotel just needs to up its game a bit or will lose out to these new places.

Room Tip: get a room with a view over the Quay

This is a comfortable oasis overlooking the docks in Dundee - room was spacious and clean. Staff were friendly and efficient. Small bar area and din't dine here but understand from family members living in Dundee that food if of a high standard. All in all a comfortable experience

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the docks

My husband and I stayed here from 24 - 28 December as we were visiting his mum who lives in Dundee, and we also had our dinner here on Christmas day itself. We loved our room! Spacious, tidy and a great view of the dock. Very peaceful. Two small points about the room: the toilet paper roll holder was useless - it was clearly missing something it needed and every use ended up with the roll on the floor; the TV volume had a maximum set and this made it impossible to hear if you were also running the central heating. We had to choose - warmth or hearing the TV programme.

The Christmas dinner was really delicious. I liked being able to choose what I wanted on the day instead of booking in advance. We all enjoyed our choices with no complaints. Also, the pacing was done very well. It was leisurely and relaxed - I never felt rushed nor did I feel like I was waiting too long. They clearly had their seatings well planned. We were well looked after by the staff who all seemed cheerful and pleasant.

Stayed here on Christmas Eve and Christmas night as the relative we were spending Christmas with does not have a spare room. Have stayed before and really like the hotel. Love the spa facilities. Only criticism was that check-in was very slow. Only one member of staff on reception and everything seemed to take ages. Rooms very comfortable and staff very friendly.

Room Tip: All rooms good

Stayed 5 nights over Christmas whilst visiting family nearby. Booked online in advance, room only. Finding the entrance is tricky due to massive roadworks all around the hotel. On arrival only 1 reception desk open, very slow to check in with only 2 people ahead of us.
Room pretty standard, nice enough, bit grubby around shower seal, bath etc. Could use a better quality vacuum cleaner in room and corridors, always needing a good clean.
Public areas good, bar ok, staff mostly excellent, minor slip when forgot all about drinks we had ordered, otherwise really nice.
Had a bar meal, good value, good food.
Overall I would use the Apex again, it met my needs fine and was inexpensive, mostly it is perfectly situated near the Tay Bridge, Dundee City centre and ring road.
