My wife and I just recently returned from a lovely week in sunny Dundee celebrating our Silver Wedding Anniversary.
A large part of our plan was to stay at a top quality hotel and travel each day into the surrounding countryside and towns just to explore (being just us, rather than Mum and Dad for a change). We had heard many good things about the Apex and after some time studying Trip Advisor and looking at the alternatives, we decided to book. My own work often uses the Apex when staff are attending conferences in the area and the feedback from colleagues was most encouraging. I booked early in the year asking for a top floor corner room with good views, shower, bath.
The hotel itself is so easy to get to and overlooks the Tay Road Bridge. Lots of work taking place in the area just now but access was easy. On arrival I have to say that the hotel looks very neat and tidy but 'utilitarian' in appearance. PLEASE DO NOT let this put you off, after all, you are looking out, not in! Reception was straight forward and the staff are pleasant and efficient. We were shown to our room on the 6th (highest) floor, which was light and airy with a very comfortable bed. The view from this particular room was fantastic looking down over the old (now refurbished) docklands and the historic vessels 'North Carr Light Ship' and 'Unicorn'. We could also see the two Tay bridges heading out across to Tayport and in the distance Broughty Ferry Castle.
We had booked bed and breakfast only as we planned to eat out wherever we travelled to each day. The Restaurant/Cafe is on the Ground Floor and once shown to your seats the staff generally offer you tea and coffee. Whilst they get this for you it's time to consider the buffet. The breakfast buffet is varied and well layed out. Everything is fresh, well presented and topped up/tidied constantly. The options range from fruit juices, cereal, yogurt, fruit, croissants, continental cheeses and cold meats to the hot grilled foods. 'Oh people the grilled foods'!! Haggis to die for!! My wife is vegetarian and so the self-serve grilled breakfast range was a blessing. Be warned though, you can eat an 'ample sufficiency' - sensible, or be a 'human food disposal unit' like me, not good if you are planning walking in nearby Tentsmuir Forest. Breakfast at the Apex can easily 'fill you up' till evening. By the third morning you have to opt for fruit/yogurt in order to actually move around! Don't be tempted by those delicious grilled smells!!
The evening meal menu looked very good and again varied, although we did not eat in at night preferring to go up town (university town = lots of eateries) or would have something on the way back from a day out. It did appear a little limited for vegetarians but you can't have everything. I did order the restaurant fish and chips one night up to the room (we arrived back very late) and this arrived within 15 minutes. It was well presented and was obviously from a fresh catch.
There are spa facilities within the hotel but we did not use these (doing other stuff!) but others expressed positive feedback to my wife and I.
It was the small touches though that really give us fond memories of our time at the APEX. Very polite (but not overfriendly) staff, the little card welcoming and congratulating us on our silver wedding, the toiletries, the fresh bottled water each day in the room refrigerator, the neat and tidy way staff presented the room for us each night on our return.
My wife and I do not often stay away from home but I have stayed in high standard hotels through my work and I have to say that the APEX rates as one of the best for me. Although a significant cost (what isn't these days), it was well worth the experience and the memories that my wife and I will treasure.
Thank you very much to all the staff at APEX Dundee and we hope you continue to provide the exceptionally high standard of service to others.
Rooms facing the docklands are best at the moment due to the works being carried out on the Road Bri...
