“Old World Charm, Modern Service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

Driving up to Hartfell on a really cold evening, the old world charm of the building shone at the end of the crescent. Rob welcomed us as if we where old friends and showed us to our charming twin room. A short time later, dinner in the Limetree restaurant. Excellent meal. Excellent value. A quick walk around a freezing Moffat and off to a comfy bed with the requested Hypo allergenic pillows and quilts. Breakfast had cereal and juice to start if required and then an excellent cooked breakfast. The sad part, having only stayed one night. On leaving, the lovely young owners checked where we were going and told us of the traffic conditions and which way to go. Thank you. Ps. If you are going to the Commonwealth games, unlike Glasgow, Hartfell House hasn't upped its prices. Glasgow is an easy hour away. What a place to use.

Stayed on the way to north Scotland. Beautiful location an established house on the outskirts just a short walk from town centre. Lovely gardens and views all round. You get the warmest of welcomes a comfortable room and the small intimate restaurant has special home cooked food of real qualify. Will we stay there again. Oh yes.

This has to be the most fabulous place to stay in Moffat. We have been coming here for seven or more years and the welcome has always been warm, the room very clean and pleasant, the breakfast - exceptional. And now there is the added advantage of The Limetree restaurant for an outstanding dinner with superbe food and excellent wines. Thank you Rob, Mhairi and Matt

We were travelling to a family function in the Cairngorms and needed to break the journey. We often stop in Moffat but on this occasion needed an overnight stay. We had looked at all the hotels in Moffat and none really inspired. This was booked as a result of the reviews it had received. We did not regret the choice. A lovely quiet location with parking available. Beautiful views from our bedroom. A friendly and cheery welcome from Rob and Mhairi, clean and comfortable facilities, though the decoration in the bedroom was a little old fashioned. The included three course meal in the Limetree Restaurant was excellent. It was well cooked and presented. Service was efficient and friendly with advice and information given about the various items on the menu. Breakfast was good with a fair choice. There is nothing else I can say. It surpassed my expectations. It was extremely good value and I need to find an excuse to visit again and stay for longer.

Booked in here because of the good reviews, and maybe our expectations were too high, but left pretty disappointed. It's a pleasant enough B&B at the back of the town, with lovely views and a quiet location. The room was clean and what you'd expect in an old Scottish B&B, including the very small double bed (which was something we'd forgotten about having got used to "double" actually being a "king" in most places these days), but it was fine for a night. We hpad lived in the next village for over 10yrs before moving south and had fond memories of Moffat (the Moffat Toffee Shop is still well worth a visit!) so decided to spend our wedding anniversary here, breaking our journey north, and were enticed to stay by the glowing reviews of the restaurant.
I don't know, perhaps this restaurant is the best in the area as it is billed, but to be honest I'd rather drive another 20 or 30mls for something better. Maybe we got it on a bad night but the dining room was soulless and uninspiring, and although the Thai / Malaysian(?) waitress was very nice she was the only staff we saw all evening, and I'm afraid it just wasn't the "delightful dining experience" we expected. Food wise it was very mixed. It is a small menu (which I always see as a good sign) and the choices read as very interesting & fresh. The starters were good, in fact my wife's mackerel starter was very good. Her main course of lamb was well cooked if unexciting, but my fish was terrible and had to be returned (not something I do lightly, but something I will do if the food is too poor to force down). Having worked in hotels, run a cooking school, and employed several chefs over the years I know things go wrong occasionally, but I'm sorry - "char-grilled" is not cremated dry flakes tasting of nothing but carbon. As I say, I have no issue with the odd cooking disaster, but my disappointment was that I was told that it was supposed to be like that and if it was replaced it would be exactly the same! The kitchen almost redeemed itself though by offering to pan fry the fish instead. Unfortunately when that arrived it was also well over-cooked, but given my wife had long finished her food and mine was now at least edible I wasn't going to make further comment. Perhaps it was a different / new chef, perhaps they weren't used to cooking grey mullet (it isn't that easy a fish to cook well as it is thin & firm), perhaps something else was taking their attention, but whatever the reason it wasn't clever.
Make the right choice from the menu and you'll be fine as there is some quality there, but don't expect the fabulous experience described in other reviews. This is a decent B&B with a restaurant that at least tries to make itself interesting, even if it doesn't always get it right.

Stayed for 2nts dinner, bed and breakfast the food at both breakfast and dinner was excellent. The location is peaceful and has amazing views. Mhairi and Rob are a lovely couple and soon make you feel at home. Moffat is a delightful town and would recommend both the town and Hartfell House for a short break.

We stayed here on our recent Land End to John O'Groats bike challenge and were seriously impressed with the fine quality food. Both the evening meal and breakfast were fantastic - I am pleased I had 120 miles to bike to burn off a few calories!
