“One of the worst hotels i have had the misfortune to stay in”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

Staying in hotels (of all grades) in excess of 200 nights a year I have to say that the Famious Star was one of my worst experiences.

Having offered to give constructive feedback on departure I was sworn at by the man who took my money. I subsequently left a review on the web site through which I booked the room, only to receive a phone call from e Owner which was incredibly aggressive.

The room smelled badly of mould, there was smoke drifting up from the bar below. The food was dire and the hotel is grubby and outdated. Some of the good reviews have clearly been written by the owners!

The reading material left in the landing is nearly 3 years old and covered in dust.

Incredibly disappointed and prompted to leave this report following the phone call, which is regrettable. If I were the owner I would have taken the opportunity to listen and learn.

Had a lovely family night out. Relaxing atmosphere in the bar, service was excellent nothing to much bother. As we had two toddlers in our group, the food was excellent and the portions were good. We had the sharing platter to start, good verity of nibbles on it. Then I had a chicken dish, with two veg and chips, and a dessert of assorted ice-creams absolutely delicious. We were a group of 8 and no complaints from anyone. Would go back again.

Room Tip: Cannot comment on the rooms as we only had a family meal.

Famous for being the narrowest hotel in the country, but big on charm and hospitality. Only stayed one night on our way up the highlands, but had a lovely evening in a good quality, good value hotel. It's not 4 star so don't go with un-realistic expectations and you wont be disappointed.
had a large room -No 7 I think - which was clean and had a good nights sleep.
Had dinner in the restaurant , which was ok and a great freshly cooked breakfast. The bar (lounge- not the public bar ) was very pleasent with excellent real ales and whiskies ! hence the good nights sleep probably )
Moffat is a lovely town and worth a visit in its own right, with lots of local shops and about 6 hotels in such a small place.

can not comment on the accomodation but the food is dire and best avoided

bills itself as the famous star, but would be more truthful if it billed itself as the infamous star

shame as its a lovely building that could do with a decent chef

Room Tip: eat somewhere else

Great value for money! We felt very comfortable and our dog was welcomed. Evening meal was good and breakfast was excellent. We couldn't fault our stay. Nice one!

Hard to think this delightful village is only about 15 minutes from the motorway! The Famous Star Hotel, with it's excellent Christmas cheer, friendly staff and FANTASTIC cooked breakfast - teamed with a quality bed and great shower, is the perfect place for a weekend away. Highly recommended.
