“Tired Hotel.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

Booked this hotel on the internet for a 2 day getaway. On arrival you couldn't help but notice that the windows in the main building were needing a good coat of paint and some repair. The need for a paint job continued inside. Reception staff were pleasant and welcoming. Key card was stamped,'' Upgraded with our compliments''. Good start we thought. Into the bedroom annex which continued the tired look. Our bedroom was on the first floor and overlooked the front garden/driveway area. This apparently was the ''upgrade''. The bedroom was basic, but clean and tidy as was the shower room/toilet. The bed was clean and comfy. The shower itself was very weak with a poor water flow. The maintenance man checked it and decided he could not increase the flow. The bedroom TV with freeview channels was not picking up the channels very well and kept cutting out the programmes. The bar/lounge area at night was cold and did not encourage us to sit there after dinner. Only one beer (Boddingtons) on offer but plenty Lagers. There was plenty of choice at breakfast and dinner and the food was tasty and well presented by friendly staff. On checkout we were informed by a manager that the hotel had been decorated last year. If so then it's had a hard time since then going by state of the paintwork. Don't think we will be back.

We had booked this hotel through Booking.com and despite some of the negative write ups we booked for 2 days and enjoyed out stay. We had paid £60.00 for 2 nights stay. The hotel is situated in Gretna Green and is quite easy to find. We were unable to book into the hotel unil 3pm. When we did they had upgraded us possibily to a better room. The room (219) was clean and modern and the bed very comfortable. Reading past negative write ups it seems the corridoor and bedroom carpet was new and the bedroom refurbished. Anyway it was lovely and our room had a big bathroom with a walk in shower
The hotel had a lot of Character and its home to the original wedding venue just next to the hotel. Its strange with so many weddings happening here we didnt see any. Thats the fun of it all. Instead of feeling this location could be over commercialised it wasnt. Gretna Green surroundings is flat and not very idyllic yet the history of the place extends back to 1710. Also once home to the much needed Devils Porridge factory. A weapons factory during the 1st World War.
The nights sleep was great although one could hear the A74 dual carridgeway not far away. The room had modern TV with freeview channels.
The breakfast was lovely. On the first morning the was a buffee breakfast. The second morning was just a normal breakfast setting. Ive stayed in numerous hotels in the last year and mostly the morning breakfast tended to be bland and tasteless but the breakfast at the Gretna tasted lovely. The added Haggis and blackpudding brought great taste.
We used the downstairs lounge in the evening and had an evening meal which was lovely. They were doing Curry night on the Tuesday night for £8. This included a drink. There is also large screen TV in the lounge.
We were getting married in Gretna and overall the locals were brilliant. Not once did we feel let down. Everyone we met fell over backwards to help us and to make sure that our special day was wonderful and never to be forgotten. From this hotel we then moved to the Gables Hotel at Gretna.
We hope your stay at the Gretna Hall was as lovely as ours. We would come again.

Room Tip: Probably ask for the front of house facing rooms. Im not sure whaat the rear facing rooms were like...

My father in law was getting married again and he chose this hotel in Gretna to stay in the night before and then hold the reception in it after the marriage ceremony. All went well apart from the price of the drink in the bar the night before. The wedding went great and we all returned to the hotel at half 4 to find out the reception meal would not be starting to be served until 6pm. So we paid the expensive prices in the bar as you do and come 6pm we all sat down to enjoy our meal etc. The starter was fine, hot and served rather quickly then everything went downhill badly after that. We did not get our main course for a another 90mins, and then the desert was another 90mins after that! They said that they had 3 staff had not turned in and they could not do any better when the groom complained! Then at 7pm they ran out of Coke both full coke and diet? We had 3 diabetics in out party the they were offered fresh orange juice!! When we complained the barmaid was really cheeky and said "what do you want me to do? see the reception" So when we went and said the the man on reception he was very abrupt and ignorant saying that maybe he should go into the village and buy a couple of bottles of diet coke for us? 2hrs later we were still waiting on the coke so i went into the village myself and bought 2 big bottles of diet coke for the kids. The service in this hotel was nothing short of pathetic, the food was at best warm, the waiting between meals was terrible and the reaction from the management when we complained was down-right appauling and ignorant. From a hotel that is supposed to be geared up for weddings this fell so far short of good that you could not even see good! The whole experience spoilt the whole day for the newly married couple and we will now arrange another party for them to make up for this appauling hotels short fall. Will never recommend this hotel to anyone ever i could not have that on my mind that i sent someone esle there for this sort of treatment.
Pathetic at best..... DO NOT USE THIS HOTEL FOR ANYTHING EXCEPT LAUGHING AT!!!

Room Tip: The rooms are ok but the rest is terrible do not use.....

We stayed here for only one night to break our journey while travelling south. The receptionist, who also doubled as our barman and waiter was welcoming and pleasant, and very quickly we were in our room which was pleasant clean and had a good outlook over the gardens towards the Solway Firth.

WE had a meal in the bar rather than the restaurant which was adequate if not outstanding. Perfectly acceptable though and reasonably priced

We only paid £30 for bed and breakfast for two, so weren't expecting great things at breakfast, but we were pleasantly surprised by the extensive buffet which was laid on.

Super value!

Went to this hotel tonight for something to eat what a disappointment. I had baked potato salad was not fresh coleslaw was very very rough. Friend had fish and chips sad to say for the price of £9.95 the fish was not even fresh it was processed. A bit steep to charge this amount when we could have had fresh fish and chips from the local chip shop. Would not recommend this hotel t anyone.

Room Tip: Did not stay here

We arrived late on in the evening and left fairly early the next morning so not a lot of time to really get to know the hotel. However, everything was fine. Room was clean and comfortable, we got a good nights sleep and the breakfast was excellent. Staff were helpful and service was quick and efficient.

The hotel is set in attractive grounds and the frontage is quite impressive. Inside, some of the decor in the bar area and the corridors is looking a bit tired and worn. We got a very good price for the room and, for the money we paid, the value was excellent. Not sure I would have been quite as a happy if I had paid the full advertised rate. Would use this hotel again.

£40 for room including cooked breakfast for 2 . I wouldn't be happy paying full rate for it but fine for a overnight stop off to break up a long drive . Breakfast was good , room clean but quite a few of the fixtures broken / in need of attention. Bed comfortable however a broken nights sleep caused by rowdy wedding guests returning to their rooms in the early hours .
