Having travelled through heavy traffic for 3 hours it was a huge relief when we finally arrived at the 'Cally Palace Hotel'. The entrance with the reception was beautiful - at the top of the stairs were 2 hugh pillars which filled the room with an oldish feeling !! The receptionist were very helpful and smiled constantly which is exactly what you like to see these days. The rooms were elegant and not too cluttered with furniture - we also noticed that they were very spacious and you were given quite a bit of room to spread out - good for bigger families. They were also very clean. Dinner was lead by head waitress Janet a very friendly and relaxed member of staff who never seemed to stop moving. The waitresses and waiters of the dining room knew what they were doing - we were very impressed when we asked a young waitress what some of the ingredients used in the dishes were - pesto had 5 basic ingredients: basil, olive oil, garlic, parmesan shavings, pine nuts. This was said without any hesitation - what can we say impressive at the least !! The Cally recently welcomed a new manager a very helpful and friendly chap called Robert McWhir. He tended to tables and chatted to a few - he seemed to get involved alot with the running of the dining room which was great to see. His assistant a beautiful and talented girl also helped throughout out the dining service and was still going when we left. She was very helpful and helped the waiters and waitresses with the food. The actual food we received that night was exquisite - it was served on the plates in a most attractive way and the service was the most fast and efficient we have seen in some time. The Cally also had a swimming pool, golf course, gym and therapy suite. We only really used the golf course throughout our stay and so we did not have time to use any of the other facilities but they all looked magnificant. To conclude the Cally was very enjoyable for us and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Gatehouse of Fleet is a very quiet town with hills and lots of countryside and there are alot of attractions to visit as well.

Spent one night in late September in order to break our journey to the ferry at Stranraer. Grounds and architecture were impressive, however the decor was tired, rather like the other guests. We were the youngest there by a long stretch (my husband is in his mid-forties!). Staff were helpful and courteous but lacked considerable professionalism. Our room was spacious but lacked any heat. The 'double' bed consisted of two aged, worn out single beds juxtaposed. There was one sheet and a perforated type blanket and counterpane, which reminded me of my mother-in-law's guest room. Stained lineoleum on bathroom floor and a generous growth of mildew on the shower cubicle made us wonder where the star rating came from. Dinner was lack lustre. It is strange that there is a formal dress code for men to ingest food of this standard. Breakfast in particular was poor.

From the moment of entering the picturesque grounds to the moment of departure one can only marvel at the overall experience. The efficiency at reception was supported by the manager who carried some of our bags to the room. The room was spacious, luxurious and clean. The view from the room overlooking the first tee of the golf course was stunning. The standard of food starting with breakfast was filling and of a very high quality. The evening menu while not exstensive was of a superior quality. The wine list was exstensive and reasonably priced, nothing was to much trouble the wine waiter ensured our white wine was served at the temperature we desired. The leisure facilities are a useful addition particularly after a round of golf. The manager asked us if there were any improvements that could be made at the time our comment was with difficulty, on reflection perhaps a form of entertainment in the bar of an evening. Would highly recommend to anybody.
Would go again.

I spent a wonderful weekend at this hotel and although the weather was cold the staff certainly weren't. The standard of service was superb and nothing was too much trouble.
The addition of the gym is great news and we enjoyed making full use of the facilities.
Unlike other reviewers I found the bedrooms up to a four star standard and the bed particularly comfortable.
The restaurant had an interesting menu and the food can only be described as superb.
I really can't recommend this hotel enough.

Having just stayed at the Cally Palace for two days we were most disappointed that this Hotel does NOT rate its four star status, the hotel is very dated and old, the furnishings are well past their sell by date and the rooms are very shabby ,friends of ours also stayed at the same time as us and their curtains were not hung onto the rail properly and some hooks were missing .The rooms were very old fashioned and had sheets and blankets on the odd single beds we had in our room.
The position of the Hotel is excellent in its own grounds, but the place needs a vast amount of money spending on it.

The Restaurant employed some pleasant staff, who were helpful but the food was very sparse to say the least.

We would NOT return to this hotel.
