“Almost a Nursing Home Ambience..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2007

Spent one night in late September in order to break our journey to the ferry at Stranraer. Grounds and architecture were impressive, however the decor was tired, rather like the other guests. We were the youngest there by a long stretch (my husband is in his mid-forties!). Staff were helpful and courteous but lacked considerable professionalism. Our room was spacious but lacked any heat. The 'double' bed consisted of two aged, worn out single beds juxtaposed. There was one sheet and a perforated type blanket and counterpane, which reminded me of my mother-in-law's guest room. Stained lineoleum on bathroom floor and a generous growth of mildew on the shower cubicle made us wonder where the star rating came from. Dinner was lack lustre. It is strange that there is a formal dress code for men to ingest food of this standard. Breakfast in particular was poor.

From the moment of entering the picturesque grounds to the moment of departure one can only marvel at the overall experience. The efficiency at reception was supported by the manager who carried some of our bags to the room. The room was spacious, luxurious and clean. The view from the room overlooking the first tee of the golf course was stunning. The standard of food starting with breakfast was filling and of a very high quality. The evening menu while not exstensive was of a superior quality. The wine list was exstensive and reasonably priced, nothing was to much trouble the wine waiter ensured our white wine was served at the temperature we desired. The leisure facilities are a useful addition particularly after a round of golf. The manager asked us if there were any improvements that could be made at the time our comment was with difficulty, on reflection perhaps a form of entertainment in the bar of an evening. Would highly recommend to anybody.
Would go again.

I spent a wonderful weekend at this hotel and although the weather was cold the staff certainly weren't. The standard of service was superb and nothing was too much trouble.
The addition of the gym is great news and we enjoyed making full use of the facilities.
Unlike other reviewers I found the bedrooms up to a four star standard and the bed particularly comfortable.
The restaurant had an interesting menu and the food can only be described as superb.
I really can't recommend this hotel enough.

Having just stayed at the Cally Palace for two days we were most disappointed that this Hotel does NOT rate its four star status, the hotel is very dated and old, the furnishings are well past their sell by date and the rooms are very shabby ,friends of ours also stayed at the same time as us and their curtains were not hung onto the rail properly and some hooks were missing .The rooms were very old fashioned and had sheets and blankets on the odd single beds we had in our room.
The position of the Hotel is excellent in its own grounds, but the place needs a vast amount of money spending on it.

The Restaurant employed some pleasant staff, who were helpful but the food was very sparse to say the least.

We would NOT return to this hotel.

My Mother and I stopped on the way to another McMillan Hotel in Portpatrick. We should have stayed here as the Fernhill was so very disappointing!.

I had wanted to stay here for years, as I thought it would be a really class hotel.

I was quite disappointed but not to the extent that i wouldn't stay again.

The room we were intially given was really nice but not suitable for my disabled Mum.

We were put in the annex and I liked the room here but the beds- so uncomfortable and the pillows were hard.

The decore wasn't my style in the main rooms but that's personal choice. The food was good but over-rated.

It was expensive for one night but overall pleasant and I would have been happy to spend more time there (with better beds).

My feeling was that it missed on classy but was doing it's best.
They really should do something about mattresses and pillows, but overall our room was nice and at least, had a little balcony.
My Mother was comfy despite a long treck to the main house.

What a shock when we got to the other hotel - thumbs down and over-rated, but that's another story...

stayed here in April (our fourth visit) so we obviously love it. The setting is so picturesque and the building impressive. On our first visit we were expecting it to be slightly shabby but not at all- very well maintained public areas and the bedrooms are a delight. The staff pay attention to detail and nothing is too much trouble e.g we asked for frsh skimmed milk in our room and thereafter a fresh jug was delivered every day. The food is excellent and unhurried with a restaurant rather than an hotel feel. The retaurant staff know about food service - very well trained. The golf course for residents only is a great luxury. We estimate that contrary to other reviewers experiences most of the guests do not play golf. As there are only about 50 or so rooms none of the facilities are ever going to be over subscribed. Since our last visit a year ago a small gym has been added which gives it another bonus point. We find the ambience one full of friendliness and relaxation whilst being completely professional. We cannot praise and find every aspect exceptional.

Stayed at the Cally Palace for one night in December as part of a wedding party. Hotel is set in beautiful grounds which are really impressive, and lovely to look at, even in wintertime.

The hotel building itself is like a grand old mansion house, and all the main public rooms are very ornate and have kept a lot of the original fittings and decoration. The only blot on the building is the ugly extension which has been built to the side of the pool area which contains extra accommodation.

Our room was in the extension, and it was *ok* but not great. On entering the bathroom, there were several dead flies lying on the floor, and although the room was clean, it was a bit drab, and didn't feel as grand as I expected.

As stated above, the public rooms are beautiful, the meal we had was excellent, which says a lot for the kitchen, since they were catering for about 100 people at one time, and managed to make the meal feel special. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Hardly slept the whole night though, as the mattress was ancient and felt like the springs had collapsed. In a hotel of this price and standard, this was unacceptable, and in the morning, having spoken to some of the other guests, our room wasn't the only one with a bad bed.

Can't really comment on the other facilities in the hotel since I didn't use them, but the pool looks quite nice, the golf course looks excellent, and the games rooms are good too, albeit they could do with a bit of an upgrade.

Overall, nice hotel, fantastic grounds, but the rooms (in the annex at least) are pretty disappointing.
