We have just returned to Cambridge from a weekend in Dumfries, visiting a sick relative. I found this hotel on the website - what a gem! This hotel was bought by the present owners earlier in the year and totally reburbished - and they have obviously spent a lot of time researching what people want when staying away from home. We were made welcome from the moment we stepped into the hotel (especially by Angus, the lovely black labrador) and our room was lovely - everything had been thought of, from the comfy bed and fluffy white towels (which are changed every day) to the little extras provided, including bottles of Scottish water and shortbread in with the teas & coffees in the room. However, what surprised us most was the food - Do not be put off by the sign outside saying "Two steaks for £10" - the restaurant at this hotel is of an exceptionally high standard. We enjoyed crayfish salad and advocado with stilton & walnuts, then barbary duck and red snapper one night and then chicken liver parfait ("out of this world") pink fillet steak and chicken stuffed with brie & spinach - all freshly cooked to exactly how we asked for it. We had no room on either night to try their wonderful puddings - but saw other visitors enjoying theirs. The menu is extensive and would not be out of place in a top class city restaurant - the full Scottish breakfast would set anyone up for the rest of the day! If you ever travel to this area - don't miss out - book rooms well ahead, as I can see that this hotel will always be full.
