5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2008

can i just say this is one of best hotels i have stayed in , i was abit worried after reading some reviews, but i take it the hotel has just been done up , the hotel was very nice, decor was lovely, rooms spotless staff lovely. i would say its more of a 4 star than a 3 star , and the leisure club was also very nice and very clean, i would highly recomend this hotel ex value 75.00 for 2 per night DB&B we booked through easy breaks cant wait to go back !!!!!!!

Got a good deal through Laterooms website - half the usual rate, I understand from others who have booked rooms here. I'd come back if I was here on business as it's convenient and a good rate, but not for a weekend break as I have a dog.

Good points - very helpful at Reception, excellent breakfast, bedroom freshly decorated in a modern style, bath has shower over so you have the option of either, leisure facilities at the hotel and across the road in the new Council facility, close to town / restaurants / big supermarket, ample free parking to the rear of the hotel (entry opposite DGOne, the Council leisure centre).

Bad points - single rooms are tiny, room for bed and desk + hard chair only, no room for an armchair, which means you watch TV sitting on the bed. This is an issue for solo women travellers like me - solo men go to the bar, we tend to stay in our rooms. Bring your own toiletries if you prefer something special - they're basic here. And it's a bit of a trek from the carpark at the back up to the hotel entrance at the front, not particularly attractive, not well signed (needs a few more confirmatory signs, or double up on the attractiveness problem with judicious use of plant pots to mark the way), and with awkward steps if you are carrying anything (but there may be a long way round that avoids them).

The hotel does take dogs by prior arrangement, but I would not come back with my Springer Spaniel as there is nowhere nearby for her to go off-lead. The small patch of grass by DGOne might be ok for a small dog on a lead.

  • Liked — convenient central location
  • Disliked — small single person's room with no armchair

Just returned from a trip to the Edinburgh Tattoo with a coach company who used this hotel for the four night stay. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was good, bacon eggs haggis potato pancakes beans tomatoes scrambled eggs ham cheese etc. fish porridge etc could be ordered at your table. Plenty to eat including cereals fruit toast etc. Evening meal was fine but some of the coach party were unahappy with the portions and after a complaint to management everything was fine. The rooms had been freshly painted and wallpapered in a most depressing brown/beige pattern, very badly lit and the bathroom was in need of updating. The linen was quite new as were the curtains and the carpet was clean. The rest of the hotel needed a makeover, I think they were trying to create an art deco look and missed it by a mile. The bar was too small to seat many people and very few other guests were staying there. The main ballroom was freezing cold and closed on the first night and opened after a request from the courier. One of the bar/restaurants in the basement was closed throughout the stay. Seagulls wake you early every morning as they seem to sleep on the roof. The rooms on one side of the building enjoy the air ducts wurring all night but to be fair the staff moved our belongings to the other side of the corridor after requesting a move of room. The building is beautiful as were the flowerbeds, it is a pity that this hotel is so depressing as the location was good, on the edge of Dumphries near to the river walks and the cinema. I must say that the leisure facilities were great, lovely pool area and jacuzzi and the gym is the best I have seen in the past few years. The cafe area at the pool was super, great food and free internet for guests, lovely pots of tea. Overall I would say this hotel is okay for a one night stay bed and breakfast but not for a week's holiday unless the decorators move in. A dog was locked in one of the rooms barking until reception were informed and the owner then put it in their car. Let's hope the next guests were informed that a dog had slept in their room!!

  • Liked — leisure fascilities
  • Disliked — poorly lit, depressing decoration

Looking on the positive side....

Hmmmm.....Great location, friendly helpful staff, beautiful building, lovely pool the 'best' gym, super cafe, free internet, new carpets, curtains and decoration....am I missing something here ???

I am pleased to note that on each and every occasion when an issue has been brought to our attention we have been able to respond positively to guest needs.
