I was completely taken in by the Hetland Hall's website, which looks fab. However, the place really doesn't live up to expectations.

Nice location, but really tired decor and dreadful food in the restaurant. Reception staff were very nice, but the restaurant staff seemed woefully undertrained and seemed pretty clueless about the menu on offer.

We were recommended this hotel to stay in with 12 others for our wedding on Feb 1st 07 and I must say that I was not disappointed. The staff were nothing but excellent and having worked in the hotel industry myself, I was impressed, The food outstanding and the attention to detail impecable. Nothing was too much for the staff and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone, especially if you're getting married, it makes your day even more perfect

My Husband and I booked this as a little rest and relaxation treat over the Christmas period. We were not disappointed. We had a honeymoon suite with a Jacuzzi bath. The room was very spacious, there was a four poster bed, sofa, arm chair and television and still lots of space!

The décor was in keeping with the period of the building. The areas we saw were well maintained.

There were different choices of food over the few days we were there all of which were delicious.

All of the staff were friendly and polite and made us feel extremely welcome during our stay.

We ventured out and Dumfries and Gretna are only a short car journey away. There are also many other things to see such as Caerlaverock Castle.

The only downside to this trip was leaving!

We booked this hotel after viewing the website.
Welcome was very half-harted. Hotel very cold. Food very poor served luke-warm. Menue said Roast Turkey what we got was Turkey Roll. Room was VERY small. Overall standard very poor. The hotel staff are the only redeaming feature at this hotel. We were not told that there would be a wedding reception on the saturday evening, directly below our room. VERY noisy, floor and bed were bouncing. Complained following morning, told that if we had asked to be moved we could'nt as the hotel was full. Perhaps putting wedding guests above the fuction suite would have been better. Hotel management were not seen at any time over the bank holiday weekend.
We have stayed in many Best Western hotels all of a very high standard. This was such a disapointment.

Very nice hotel overall. My greatest complaint was the quality of the decor. Someone in January of this year remarked that the decor was not tatty, but I would have to disagree. Although they were nice maybe in the 60s or 70s, the chairs, drapes and wallpaper were rather dated for today! It's definitely not "traditional" as a former guest remarked, it's outdated and drab. For the price they charge, an update is needed!
The food here was excellent. Even though we arrived at 9 pm the food still arrived promptly. The rooms were very very large and included couches and king size beds (in Europe they push two twins together). My bathroom had a specialty shower with jets everywhere and steam, which definitely was a plus.

We were very impressed with the hotel. What we was really impressed with was the meals provided. The chef had put a lot of effort into the presentation of the meal. So much so you didn't want to spoil it! The staff were very helpful.

We stayed at the Hetland Hall Hotel for two nights, Saturday and Sunday, just for a break and a bit of relaxation and certainly found it here. A lovely location and relatively easy to find.

Both inside and outside are well maintained and sympathetically decorated. I can only assume that this has been updated since previous travellers visited as we found no sign of tatty decor.

Overall we found the staff to be freindly and helpful but my one criticism would be upon our arrival. I felt there was no welcome as such and many aspects of our stay were not explained to us. However, this really is all I have to complain about and as for the food!!! Far far exceeded our expectations and I can only commend the Hotel on their chefs (We dined in the restaurant on both evenings and learnt that they had two chefs, one on each of our nights there) The presentation, quality of the food and service was second to none. Splendid!!
