“great service, friendly staff, good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2009

Beautifully styled in the public areas, although our room felt like it could do with updating a bit. Good location for exploring further afield and Peebles is a nice little town. I had to spend a day on my own as my partner attended a business meeting but was more than happy and very comfortable to sit in the lounge and read a paper with a coffee. The staff were all very obliging, especially Keith who works on nights. The food was of a good standard with a good wine list and the prices were reasonable in the bar and the restaurant. Breakfast was probably the best I have ever had in a hotel and even though my partner arrived after service had officially ended one morning, he was still offered full breakfast, made to order. Nice relaxed atmosphere in the hotel with plenty of parking (mostly at the rear down a steep slope); it is testament to a fine hotel when the public frequent it as much as the staying guests and this provided a good mix of clientelle. Warm and clean with plenty of local information. Would definitely recommend.

As one of the organisers of an MG enthusiats weekend, we used the Tontine Hotel in Peebles from 24th Sept to 27th Sep 2009. There were 34 people and 20 MG cars. The hotel was excellent in acommodating us and provided excellet service. Evening meals were of a high standard and breakfast equal to this. Rooms were clean, well furnished and well appointed. Staff were alway polite, professional and willing to help. Book it, you wont go far wrong!

Tontine Hotel was the second stop on our tour. We we a group of Irving's. We were a bus of 45 and and lots of luggage. Every single person in house kicked in to help us get situated. No problem for them to meet all requests with a smile and very gracious the whole stay. Breakfast was a delight and ALL staff available . It was a delight to stay at this Hotel and the Management gets 10 STARS in my book.
I would recommend this hotel for service and graciousness with a smile.

Having stayed at the Tontine before, I knew what to expect but was still impressed by the friendliness and high standard of this family run hotel which delivers much more than might be expected from a similarly sized hotel in rural Scotland.

The Tontine is located centrally on Peebles High Street, in the heart of the picturesque Scottish Borders. It's superbly located for access to local amenities as well as a range of outdoor activities including Europe's premier mountain biking venue at Glentress Forest and numerous Golf courses.

The Tontine has good, clean, comfortable rooms and plenty of them. The public spaces are large, open and well furnished and there's always a buzz as locals drop in for morning coffee or afternoon tea - including very tempting home made cakes not to be missed!

Breakfast choices are extensive ranging from coffee, cereal and toast to a full cooked Scots breakfast (haggis and all) and is included in the very reasonable room rate.

The restaurant serves well prepared meals from a lengthy menu and is equally suited to a quick lunch as it is to fine dining.

Broadband internet service is available in all rooms and public areas which is great if, like me, you are expected to work while travelling. The only minor niggle here is that the service provider doesn't offer a long stay rate.

Overall, for me, the chief selling point of the Tontine is the friendliness of the staff and proprietors. I never felt like an anonymous guest, more like a distant relative staying for a while. I'd like to say a special thank you to Kate, Susan and the whole team for making me feel so at home.

I would heartily reccommend the Tontine to anyone considering a stay in the Borders, whether for a weekend getaway or a longer stay.

Stayed the weekend for a wedding - had upteen little requests and one major headache after our 21 month old daughter was violently sick in the car on our way there. Couldn't have asked for better - staff went the extra distance from the moment we arrived to the time that we left. Everyone had a smile, a kind word and a sincere manner and literaly nothing seemed too much trouble. Even during the wedding reception they still found the extra time to offer paper and crayons to our daughter and other children. I couldn't praise the staff enough and into the bargain the food was excellent. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend especially if you have children.

As a large group this was our last stop off on our long weekend and the hotel we were looking forward to the most. Although the public areas were great the bedrooms could do with updating, i know some of the rooms have been updated already but the ones that haven't need it. One of my party toilets was is a terrible state and had not been cleaned from the previous nights guests not the welcome you wish for, my bathroom floor had pubic hair all over it and the bedroom needed a very good clean. The bar service was slow with lot's of empty dirty glasses everywhere.

The plus and best part of our stay was the restaurant and the food, the gentleman who served us could not be faulted a credit to the hotel he could not do enough for us and the food was fantastic it helped to make up for our dissapointment with the bedrooms.

I don't think we would return to the hotel.

The Tontine Hotel prides itself on the service that it gives to customers and we are very disapointed to read about these comments. We were aware that the group were not happy on checking in and one of our reception team personally cleaned the bathroom concerned after being made aware of their concerns. We also apologised to the guests at check out and let them know that housekeeping had been informed and that this was a glitch in the normal high standards of cleanliness that we expect in all areas of the hotel. We will be personally phoning them again to apologise.
