“Lovely weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

Just returned from an overnight stay at Castle Venlaw - chosen because of otehr reviews we'd seen. Perfect location for mountain biking in Glentress forest, but Peebles seems like a very nice place in its own right.
A building with great character, Room pleasant and comfy bed, great views, nice garden, very friendly and pleasant staff and a good quality dinner at reasonable price - what's not to like?

We booked this hotel as we were attending a local wedding. The photos on the website made us believe it was very special and it didn't disappoint. The hotel is very old and has a great feel to it. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We only stayed for one night as the only reason we were in Peebles was for the wedding, we were a little disappointed it was not longer. To top it off they have deer roaming around the local countryside.

We had two days at this Wonderful Hotel - clean and traditional - makes a change from the modern sterile hotels available. This is an old building with no lifts - we were on the 2nd floor and had no problems with that. Staff were very friendly and pleasant. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and enjoyed the meal - Steak Pie, a good choice. Breakfast was very nice - with a good range to choose from all cooked to order - not kept warm under lamps ! The walk into town needed more effort coming home (quite steep) !! Parking was not a problem. We will return.

Room Tip: Rooms all have stairs - no problem for abled persons.

We had to spend a couple of nights in Peebles on a 8 night road trip around Scotland & Northern England.
Hotel is very old and maybe not to everyone's taste but we found it clean, quiet and the staff were friendly. No lifts and steep stairs. Car a must as it is up a steep unlit lane. Breakfast was very nice and we also had a meal in the Library bar. Prices the same as restaurant but less formal. Food was good but no serviettes supplied which was a surprise for what we paid.
Internet was not the best and the noise from the fan in bathroom really loud.
Bed very comfortable, very little in the way of toiletries supplied. Unusual that a member of staff had to stay on duty until we returned after midnight which put pressure on us not to stay out too late. Would stay again if in the area.

We booked this hotel after looking at Trip advisor and on Arrival we were met with a very friendly lady at reception that showed us to our room up 3 or 4 flights I cant remember and when we got to the room it was very small and basic as this was my wifes birthday I saw the look on her face and it told me that she wasn't happy, so we decided that we should look for something else, I have no doubt the Hotel would have larger rooms, I wish we were told on booking as the room price wasn't cheap. I will know next time when booking to be more careful as it cost us the 1st night as we decided that it wasn't for us. I have no doubt the food would be good but however please be warned that you are not stuck in the attic in a box room

Room Tip: make sure that you don't get the box room

We have just returned from an overnight stay only problem it was not long enough. Location just outside Peebles tranquil peace and quiet and while this may not suit everyone it was just lovely to get away from everything. Unable to comment on wi fi as we are able to survive without this. Food was excellent bar area was comfortable. Our room was a turret room on the top floor with beautiful views from both bedroom and bathroom and both of these windows opened. Stacks of hot water for bath/shower. Staff were absolutely fabulous. Anything you wanted you only had to ask. They were extremely friendly and helpful. We will be staying here again but for a longer break

Room Tip: If you have no mobility problems go for a room on the top floor

Pros: beautiful location and grounds on a rise, down a wooded lane on the outskirts of Peebles; historic building, resembling a small French chateau; spacious rooms, larger than anticipated; friendly staff.
Cons: impossible for these days, wi-fi does not reach an unspecified number of rooms, and there is no telephone in the suites - the suggestion is that the 'castle walls' are too thick, but this is easily circumvented with current technology; breakfast is mediocre; although the rooms are grand, the windows are prevented from opening properly (health & safety), which is a deal-breaker for me (mild claustrophobia); the room guide apologises for the possibility that hot water may be intermittent at times, and proposes that this is concomitent with the building's antiquity - (it dates from the 18th century, but I hardly think the boiler is likely to be original!)
However. I don't wish to put anyone off the place; although I think there are flaws in the management of the hotel, I would still recommend it, simply for the gorgeous factor, and apart from the window issue, I would probably stay there again because of that.

Room Tip: If you don't mind stairs - there is no lift - there is a room at the top which is actually two r...
