We were at Peebles Hydro with our family of 5, and another family of 4. Neither of us had been before.
There was a 3 nights for 2 Dinner, Bed and Breakfast offer running which we took up, and overall our experience was pretty good, but certainly not terrific.
I'll start with the good points:
The staff universally were very good, particularly the waiting staff.
Food was pretty decent, though on one night I wasn't able to get 2 out of my 3 preferred choices - and the hotel wasn't at full capacity. Portions could perhaps have been more generous, but I get that this was part of an offer so maybe these were cut down a little.
Pool was great - big, warm, and the sauna and steam room whilst small were enjoyable, you just had to time it right to get a seat.
My wife tried the spa and said that the girl who gave her her treatment was very good - no idle chat, just an explanation of the treatment and then straight on with the service.
Activities - there was an activities leader who organised things like bowling tournaments, badminton tournaments etc and these were fun for all the family. You could help yourself to tennis racquets for some outdoor tennis, the same goes for a pitch and putt course though in February it wasn't much fun - grass was very wet and overgrown, but that's exactly what you'd expect. We had to try it though...
The hotel itself is very dated - from speaking to some regulars from there they love that about it, but as someone who racks up around 75+ nights a year in genuine 4* hotels, it just doesn't measure up to what I expected.
The décor was very old, both through the main areas and in the rooms, and many standard facilities that I'd expect of a 4* just weren't there. The rooms seemed clean, the bedding certainly was clean, but there was just a general tiredness about the place that to be honest didn't really meet my expectations. There's only so much you can pass off as "traditionally charming".
Peebles itself is a lovely little town, and as others on this thread have said, there's also the Cardrona hotel which seems to be better equipped, fresher and more modern, so whilst I think we will go back to Peebles, it'd have to be an exceptional offer to get me back to Peebles Hydro I'm afraid.
