“Quality stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2014

Stayed a year ago for a weekend break close enough to, but set away from Edinburgh. Food was absolutely superb as indeed was the attentive service throughout. Had a room at the very top of this enchanting building with great views of the grounds. Overall a great experience. Highly recommended.

Fabulous country house Hotel. Very attentive staff, without being overbearing. I had upgraded to a suite, which was a fabulous room with lovely views onto the rear gardens.
Dinner was excellent.
Breakfast was everything it should be.
A beautiful old home, hope to return someday.

Our two nights here in September 2013 were truly superb. This is defnitiely one of the best country house hotels we've ever stayed in within the UK. We booked the a promotional DBB package and had a very nice room right up at the top of the hotel with a large bathroom and excellent views across the surrounding countryside (especially when it wasn't raining). Note that rooms at the very top floor are not reached by the lift, so some carrying of luggage up one final flight of stairs is needed in this case.

The bed was large and extremely comfortable with high-quality bedding. The bathroom was very clean and spacious but the shower arrangement over the bath could do with updating - the pressure was very high but it's one of those showers where you cannot adjust the water flow independently of the temperature, so this did tend to produce a bit of a flood everytime it was used!

The staff were extremely nice and professional and I am saddened to read in another TR that they are being laid off for the winter due to refurbishment work. This also explains why several of the whiskies on the whisky menu in the bar were unavailable - we were told this was because they were running down stocks for the winter, which seemed ordinarily like a strange thing to do.

Both evenings started with pre-dinner drinks in the ground floor bar, where you are served canapes and puruse the dinner menu. There are several menus with different price bands. Those guests on the DBB package are entitled to the cheapest 3-course menu but can upgrade to one ot the more expensive ones by paying the price difference on a course-by-course basis, which seemed like a reasonable approach. Note also that dinners here are an unhurried, all-evening affair, which suited us fine but may not be to everyone's taste.

Guests are then escorted upstairs to the dining room when their specific table is ready. This room has a definite "wow" factor and is beautifully set up with elegant table setting, candles and soothing background music. The service is impeccable without any pretension, the food is sublime though portions are very small: but this is food to be savoured and not rushed. The wine list is excellent and we were impressed by both bottles we selected. After dinner, many guests went back to the bar to enjoy an after-dinner whisky in the company of the very convivial bar staff.

Breakfasts are served in the same dining room as the dinners, which gives you a chance to admire this show-piece room in natural lighting conditions, where you can better see the amazing ceiling. Continental and/or full Scottish breakfasts are available.

There's plenty ot see in the Peebles area and we will definitely consider coming back to Cringletie House if we can take advantage of a special offer in the future.

We arrived to find that the hotel that had just won an award then made nearly all the staff redundant shutting the hotel until next March. In order to keep the AA rosettes they told the AA they were refurbishing! It was quite a shock when you are just there for a few days to relax.
Having said that the staff worked with impeccable dignity. Food was very good, better than many restaurants in London city centre e.g Coq D'Argent which was more expensive.

Dear Mr Weinzweig, thank you very much for your review. You are absolutely right re our major achievement of becoming the AA Hotel of the Year 2013-14; we all are extremely proud of this achievement. We informed the AA well in advance of the fact we had to close for the winter period and we were still awarded this prize.
We are embarking on 6 different project over the winter period all aimed at improving the guests experience at Cringletie. You can read about the various projects and their progress on our web-blog http://www.cringletie.com/blog.
Finally, you are absolutely right about our staff, who have been doing a superb job despite having been told about the winter closure. All of the staff have been invited to come back in February.
So, we are very confident that we will be able to continue our track record for the 12th year running from when we re-open in February.
We do hope that you will visit us again and see for yourself the results!
Jacob van Houdt.

We found it ! Having booked into a local hydro, we were extremely disappointed by the hotel, its dining arrangements and the prospect of dinner looked very bleak. We hit the road and not five minutes from Peebles found Cringletie House ! A fabulous discovery which lifted our spirits, and provided a few hours of Scottish warmth, tradition, delicious food in historic surrounds. Plus, they were able to fit us in at the last minute. "If only it could be like this all the time " ...the immortal words of Van Morrison. The perfect place for a hideaway weekend, and excellent value.

We returned to Cringletie after making our first visit in January 2013 for a one night "Tasty Sunday" stay. This includes bed, breakfast and a gourmet tasting dinner with wine. It is incredibly good value if you like good food, well presented, well served and in pleasant surroundings.

The dinner was absolutely excellent, and the wines chosen to accompany the courses were thoughtfully selected and very enjoyable. Once again Cringletie was able to marry the food and the wine into a synergy. Staff are friendly and helpful, indeed having stayed in a number of 5* and 5* PLUS hotels, their attention to detail and concern for the guest matched those institutions (I am thinking for example of Chateau Frontenac in Quebec, Vier Jahreszeiten in Hamburg, La Reine Elisabeth in Montreal).

I must also mention the breakfast - it is almost idyllic to have a freshly prepared breakfast brought to you at the table, rather than the chain hotel buffet with dried up over-cooked food which is great for those who appreciate quantity over quality, but poor for those who seek something tasty but not large. The smoked haddock and poached egg was superb; my wife asked for smoked salmon with scrambled egg not made with cream and got exactly what she asked for.

I really hope that when the hotel re-opens in March 2014 after its projected closure this autumn, it will continue these excellent standards.
