Had to wait to check in while the barkeeper took a handful of remote controls to find one that worked for another guest. When he determined our room number, he was surprised to find that the key was actually in place. The second we opened the door, we smelled the mold. Much of the bathroom ceiling and floor had black mold.
This room wasn't just old-fashioned in it's out-of-datedness, it was just plain shabby. The TV was at least 15 years old and sat on such a small table that my husband had to sit on the floor to watch. We chose to go down to the bar to watch world cup and have a beverage. Most of the time we were there, we were alone -- certainly no customers and usually not a bartender. We also paid more for this room than we did for place we stayed the night before which was clean, comfortable, lovely and furnished a great breakfast. (At Cross Keys, there were some foods / juices set out, but much of the tableware and dishes weren't clean.)
There are lots of lovely B&Bs and small hotels in Scotland. There's no reason to stay at Cross Keys.
