“Very clean & modern with an outstanding staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

Very new, very modern & convenient to central city. Comfortable stay, but quirky rooms & baths. Relatively spacious room, very clean, but no luggage rack & no place for suitcase except on the floor. Bathroom was also very clean, modern & spacious, but if the door was left open after taking a shower, it may set off the smoke/ fire alarm (notice posted on wall in bathroom advising that door cannot be propped open due to this). No electric vent in the bathroom, so bathroom remains steamy for awhile. New bath & shower w/ great water pressure, but no place to put shampoo bottles except on floor of shower. Other reviewer mentions noisy doors, and we agree, & it was annoying. All of these complaints are minor though, & would definitely return.
Try the baked eggs- very different from any other B&B breakfast we've had.
And agree with other reviewer - stars go to staff. They were the absolute best we've encountered, and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street can be noisy at night on weekends.

Just back from ranald stayed in room 209 while room comfortable enough the view from the room was an unkept rock face ten feet away!!! And the baked egg at breakfast was as bad as it sounds. This is a b+b I'm afraid

We stayed our last night in Scotland in this delightful hotel. The rooms were small but well organized and spotless. Shower was great, as was the bed. And breakfast was one of the best -- especially the baked eggs. And they even gave us the recipe so we can make them at home! The staff couldn't have been more helpful, even carrying our friends' bags upstairs. We were concerned about the parking, but found a spot on the street with no problems. We also ate at their sister restaurant by the harbor and our meal was great, with a free drink. Great location for walking around town. Just sorry we didn't have more time to spend in this beautiful little city.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back, if you are concerned about noise.

Spent a night here with two other couples and the hotel was great, clean, comfortable, breakfast was good, but the gold star has to go to the lovely staff, nothing was too much trouble, very friendly.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have a view of a cliff but very private and no noise from pubs that other reviewer...

If a hotel describes its rooms as quirky, curious, original or whatever then you know what to expect and can hardly complain if floorboards creak, the plumbing gurgles and whines and you can follow the conversation in the neighbouring rooms. The Ranald, fortunately, is modern, and has nothing to hide or disguise. It is simple but the rooms are excellent, with comfort and safety in mind. The breakfast area is very small but who needs acres of space, and don't expect a full traditional Scottish breakfast but be happy that someone came up with the idea of delicious baked eggs over smoked salmon or two other fillings. There is plenty more to choose from.
No creaking floorboards, no noisy plumbing, no sound from neighbouring rooms - but try not to get a room by the very efficient fire doors which clang shut (rather noise and safety than dodgy fire doors and quiet) if not slowed down, and hope that other hotel guests go to bed early because the conversation and noisy doorlocks in the corridor do penetrate with ease.
Parking no problem in the evening, even on a Saturday.

Room Tip: Larger rooms fab

Small, modern hotel perfect for overnight stays. Staff very, very friendly and efficient. Excellent breakfast , - try the baked eggs, (they also do a "grab bag" for a quick getaway). Easy walking distance to ferry and train station.

When on a short stay, the most important things are a comfortable bed, hot shower and good breakfast. This hotel provides all of these. There are no communal rooms to speak of (a small bar area come breakfast room) but the bedrooms are spacious enough. I must praise the staff, all were friendly and helpful. Minor disturbance of sleep when the pub down the road emptied but not enough to ruin our stay.
