we have just returned from an "easy breaks" arranged holiday in the Regent Hotel. The strong point of the hotel is the staff. They were kind, helpful, and run off their feet. First, they had a lot to contend with. The hotel is falling to bits. Art Deco in design, perhaps, but not apparently modernised since. The windows still have metal frames. Freezing. Damp. The heating is totally inadequate. The staff provided us with nice warm blankets to drape round our shoulders as we sat in the only communal area - the bar. They also brought plug in electric heaters - one per table. Even went to the trouble of providing me with a hot water bottle. The walls covered in wood chip wall paper, and the floors with carpet which had holes, seams which gaped and quite dirty. Never once saw a hoover in action. The down stairs lady's toilet was not cleaned the three days we were there. When was the last time you were in a toilet which had obscenities drawn, and written on the lavatory door? Now they staff have to contend with all of this, but there was also a power cut when we were there, and the heating was negligible in the face of the storm level winds. The chef did the best he could with his limited budget. (We were paying very little for our break) and I believe you get what you pay for. The house wine, in my opinion, was "mingin" and undrinkable. When would you expect to go to Oban not get fish? Certainly no fresh fish. The power cut meant the lift was off. Our room was on he fourth floor, so we were given a room on the first floor. We saw right away that it was clean. That was when we realised how unclean our original room had been. Our train was cancelled so wee had to stay another night Now given all these conditions, i did not expect to pay MORE than the original easy-breaks deal. I would have expected some kind of discount. What surprised me was that other guests who were there on a bus tour thought the hotel was quite nice. It has put me right off the bus companies who use it, because if this is the standard of hotel they use, I am not going with them.
