On arrival it was explained that hotel policy dictated that we needed to pay for our first night up front. We probably should have guessed it would go down hill from here.
The hotel has a pretty website - Oban is a pretty place. The hotel is attractive and right on the promenade. We booked a standard room with a sea view and a fold out bed for our 6 year old. On arrival we received directions to the room and a keycard. No assistance. Up some stairs, along a long passage which did nothing to disguise the smell from the kitchen, up 3 flights and into our room. These rooms ( standard) are in a building behind the main hotel and can only be described at a glorified block of flats. The room had a large comfey bed, thankfully as the fold up bed was hopeless. The bed took up the entire room and on the small dresser several laminated notices were propped up informing us ' not to place luggage on furniture', and not to damage the room, otherwise we would incur a fine of up £250! There was bird poop on the window, spoiled the view between the buildings out to sea.
The highlight was supposed to be the jacuzzi bath - it makes such a noise it would be hard to relax in it, and later the next room had theirs on and it reverberated through the wall. All night we heard footsteps from the upstairs room.
Choosing to sit in the lounge pre dinner and read, we were instantly aware of sport on the large bar tv. Only the barman was watching, and eating his tea. The volume remained up while others tried to have a quiet chat. We collected our drinks from him, and though we sat for over an hour we were not offered another. We did not stay for dinner.
Breakfast was buffet style, soggy toast, tinned fruit, watery scambled egg, slimy mushrooms.
We stayed two nights at the Holiday Inn in Glasgow thereafter, ( part of a business trip) and in comparison and in all honesty The Queens Hotel has alot of work to do to come close to them.

We are dismayed to read this review from goseerelax, especially as the day before their stay we were inspected by the Scottish Tourist Board, who awarded the hotel 4 stars making the hotel the only 4 star hotel both in Oban and also in the area.

As is common practice nowadays, we ask for payment of the first night stay on arrival so that we know that a guests credit card is valid and thus prevents fraud.. We could preauthorise but this takes more time and creates more paperwork for everyone including our guests.
Goseerelax was informed that our standard rooms, which contain Superking sized beds are unsuitable for families. Whilst there is a sitting area in the room, adding a fold out bed makes it difficult to move around. Goseerelax insisted on this room instead of the more expensive family rooms.
To reach the 4th floor room goseerelax stayed in there is long corridor to negotiate. This corridor is a protected lobby, which means that there are fire doors at either end, which are kept closed at all times. There is no way that any smells can come from the kitchen. Also, as the room was on the fourth floor there is a lift available, which is well signed. Goseerelax does not mention the lift in her review.
With regard to the noisy jacuzzi bath, we have yet to come across a quiet one!!
The buffet breakfast was praised by the Scottish Board inspector the day before. The toast is placed in a toast rack immediately it is ready so we are uncertain how goseerelax's toast was soggy. Also the fruit salad is made on the premises from fresh fruit. The mushrooms are lightly fried in butter and seasoning.
As for the other "gripes" goseerelax never complained during her stay and we can only say that we were inspected the day before and awarded 4 stars. How a hotel can go from being awarded 4 stars following a very detailed and exhaustive inspection to being "horrible" in one day is beyond us.
