Columba Hotel

The Columba is a pretty good hotel to be fair. After reading the reviews we expected a dodgy Spanish waiter and a joiner with a garden gnome inside him. However what we found that it was very clean, rooms were as per the website, pleasant and had a great view of the port. Upon reading the review regarding the view being good bar the ferry parked infront of the building, what did they expect from a ferry port, did they expect it to be hidden under someones bed? Or perhaps maybe they should remove the poor people next time these guests travel to Africa as they make it look dirty? In general the rooms were very good for a 3 star hotel and staff were helpful enough. The only point I would make is that the exterior is a bit sketchy and the lift comes accross as a death trap but understand they are developing the site and good to see they started with the rooms as most hotels tart up the outside and the rooms do not live up to the exterior.

I contacted the columba hotel, and stayed for one night, the service was 100% satisfactory, would recommend it to anybody, I have read all the reviews on here, and they are basically all talking nonsense, you should check it out for yourself before, taking other peoples word for it.

Our first impression of the hotel was waiting around in reception whilst 2 members of staff were debating what they were going to get from the local chip shop (which did not bode well for the hotel restaurants food!). This level of service seemed to be standard for the duration of our stay; customers are made to wait until the staff have finished talking amongst themselves - really poor customer attention.

Our room was tired and dirty, generally speaking with a leaking shower and an obvious damp problem in the room as well as the bathroom. This was consistent with the general appearance of the hotel - holes in the interior wall, shoddy furnishings and finishings.

The only highlight of the stay was the (self-service) buffet breakfast, which aside from a few missing items was very good quality and provided a good food foundation to get on the road and as far from Oban and this hotel as possible.

“Not Impressed”

Columba Hotel

Arrived at the Columba for a 2 night stay on Good Friday. Looks decrepid from outside, but they have started renovating the rooms, and ours (102) had been refurbished with modern bedding and HD TV on the wall. Unfortunately, that was the last of the good news.

Getting out of the shower in the refurbished bathroom is a major operation, and you have to exit next to the heated towel rail. Needless to say, 3 inch burn to my arm. Went to report it to the Hotel, who could not find the accident report book when I asked to make an entry. They admitted that this had happened before, so I would suggest sacking their interior designers. No offer of first aider and no ice packs available!

Breakfast on Easter Sunday was poor as had been eaten by one of the bus parties. Yes, there was cooked food left at the buffet, but had run out of eggs that were not replaced. No pastries or croissants left as all eaten by the coach party, and none kept in reserve despite there still being an hour left in breakfast service.

Finally, we paid for a seaview, and got a lovely one, until the Isle of Mull Ferry decided to park at the quayside at 8pm for the night. Haven't got a problem with that as it was still a seaview, but when it started its engines at 5-30am our room vibrated until 6-30 when it sailed to the ramp on the other side of the harbour! Again the receptionist said that this had been happening recently.

All in all, it may be nice after it is refurbished, but certainly not impressed with the customer service. Full price charged, no discount offered, and no apology for the injury or inconvenience.

“outside appearance deceives”

Just returned from short break in Columba. Given recently refurb. room, which was fantastic. View over bay and Kerra, the mountains of Mull etc, absolutely great, even at night. Room had very modern furnishings and new upmarket bathroom, also wide/flat screen telly. Staff great on our B&B trip, but breakfast could have been warmer. (maybe i got tail end of food bins). Staff very helpful & pleasant, nothing too much bother. If you get a refurb. room you will love it. We'll be back, especially if they continue with special rates for February.
Ate evening meal accross road at Oban Inn. Again, much to be desired from outside, but food & wine excellent, and only place to eat in Oban where we felt we wer'nt being ripped off.
