On a recent trip through Aberdeenshire, my husband and I experienced accommodations so fraught with owner apathy and staff disdain that we thought the future of the Scottish hospitality industry was doomed. Fortunately, Scotland’s west coast does not suffer from the same maladies. In this regard, Aberdeenshire’s hoteliers should take a lesson from Newton Hall Guest House.
With the stunning views over Loch Fyne and lovely Inveraray at its doorstep, Newton Hall was a joy at every turn. Greeting us at the door, our host Bill struck the fine balance between friendly, informative bon vivant and discreet, accommodating hospitality professional. The sympathetic renovation of this former kirk further confirmed that this was a man who takes pride in his establishment and the service he provides to his guests.
The rooms – we stayed in two – were decorated to exacting standards by Bill’s wife, who seems to know a thing or two about the art of comfort fused with style. Bill himself inspected the work of their cleaning staff, found a tiny detail wanting (something we ourselves had not observed) and set off to correct the offending element. We never even knew what the problem was because it was remedied within minutes.
Clearly, Bill understood his audience when suggesting dining options. He pointed us to The George Hotel, where one night of a delicious repast and wine that had us ordering a second bottle was not enough. Back we came the second night for an encore performance.
Breakfast was an efficient operation because Bill took orders the previous night. With the efficiencies handled, Bill and his wife focused their energies on serving quality food quickly. And yet never did we feel whisked from the dining room to accommodate a new seating. In fact, Bill made the rounds to every guest, ensuring that everyone was happy and sated.
To the innkeepers of Aberdeenshire: On your next day off, drive to Inveraray and stay the night at Newton Hall. You might learn how it is meant to be done.
