“Barry & Barbara over from New Zealand for lunch this Wednesday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

My wife Diane and I took our friends Barry & Barbara who are on holiday all the way from New Zealand and after our visit to nearby Glamis castle we took them to the Strathmore Arms Hotel in the village of Glamis . The bar area was busy with customers all having lunch and our Front of the House Manager was working this day being a Wednesday and she took us over to a table for four and took our orders for any drinks and gave us of course their NEW menus .

We ordered our starters and my wife and I had Prawns again from Norway for some reason and not Scottish landed prawns . Our friends ordered their starters - soup of the day (tommato) and they too said that that course was very nice . Then my wife and I both had Battered Haddock with the usual and our friends had Pheasant with the usual and they said too that it was great .

We were all looked after very well by this young lady - front of the house manager and she has a very pleasant nature and really helpful and a great asset to the Hotel in general.
We had a really good meal and the courses were all very hot and very well presented . We did not have the waiting that is mentioned by others on this Tripadvisor .

Maybe its a Wednesday that this member of staff is on duty and she gives 100% service to the customers visiting the hotel in Glamis

Had read negative comments on this hotel before, but thought we would give it the benefit of the doubt. Sadly, the reviews were correct. We waited almost an hour for our main course in the bar, which wasn't overly busy. The restaurant was open, I think, but there was no one in the room. On the whole the food was okay and portion sizes were sufficient. But, my venison casserole was very strong and bitter, and the meat was dry, although the dog didn't seem to mind when she ate the leftovers we took home ! The wait for dessert wasn't as long, but by then the damage had been done. Probably wouldn't go back, unless everywhere else was fully booked.

We went to the strathmore arms as heard it was good. However, our experience of the strathmore arms was not even near 'good'. We had to wait around 30 minutes for average starters, then proceeded to wait god knows how long before asking for our starters to be cleared to get our mains. Once our mains arrived (2 hours after arriving at the strathmore arms) we had to ask for drinks, we didn't get our drinks until we had finished our main courses.
Overall I am very dissappointed with the service and I would recommend they get their act together before they put more locals off.

Had a special meal to celebrate a 40th birthday. First class service and quality of food was excellent. The menu was varied from comfort food to special dishes, a great choice. We dined in the dining room as opposed to the pub. The surroundings were ok but a bit dated. I am sure it's the same wallpaper that was on the last time I was there which is a good number of years ago. Overall no hesitation in recommending this restaurant.

Myself and a friend booked in to the Strathmore Arms after we were unable to get accommodation in Kirriemuir. What a very pleasant surprise! We arrived after 9pm but providing a meal for us was not an issue for which we were very grateful. Food was fantastic and portion size was great. We booked a twin room which was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was enough to keep us going most of the day. We would like to thank the Spanish waitress(didn't get her name) for her exceptional hospitality. Nothing was too much trouble, her customer service was second to none. The only complaint we had was the noise from a washing machine or tumble dryer in the private accommodation above us at 7am on Sunday morning. Overall excellent accommodation and food for a very reasonable price. We come to Kirriemuir every year and usually stay in the town, however, in future we will return to the Strathmore Arms at Glamis a short bus trip away.

Room Tip: We had a room at the front of the hotel, but were not disturbed in any way by traffic noise

From the outside the place looks like a big house but this is deceiving as the interior is warm and cosy and has character. The staff were most welcoming and had us booked in quickly. As we would have a full buffet in the evening we had a snack late afternoon and had a look at the menu which looked quite good and fairly reasonably price even though drinks were expensive, £1.90 for a small glass of coke and alcoholic drinks with prices more akin to a city centre.
The room was roomy and a very comfy bed, all in all very good value for money. A little draw back with the cold water as it had to be run for quite time before it became clear and drinkable even though a heavy taste still lingered, not too sure what was colouring and flavouring the water.
The function went well and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves even though it was a drag having to go through to the public bar for drinks. In there the locals seemed to recent visitors, as if we were invading their place. A few were obviously worse the wear for drink and were openly hostile and very argumentative, really spoiling the night.
Sleep was difficult as there were noises echoing throughout the hotel late into the night probably staff, then starting very early in the morning accompanied by children running about, screaming and the TVs in other rooms were so load we could hear what programs were on. So after a few hours of disturbed sleep we decided to get up but I felt really rough. Lack of sleep, funny water or something from the buffet I’m not too sure and as I did not have much to drink my money is on the poor water quality that up set my stomach. We went downstairs and it was commented by the staff that I looked rough and must of had good night. Where in reality, I was looking rough from a severe lack of sleep and being sick from drinking poor quality water.
In summary take earplugs, bottled water and stay away from the locals.
