“Classic Open Course”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

I enjoyed playing the championship course as it reminded me times when I was a kid watching Open Championships on tv. I wish more of the course was directly next to the ocean like Troon or Turnberry, but it was a great experience overall. Classic links golf.

“On Do Not Play List”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

Overrated and way too difficult for most folders. Zero scenery. A few famous holes but not worth it. Burnside is even worse.

“Carnasty...in a good way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

Many reviewers have complained about the nearby gun range or the general 'shabby' state of the fairways. They just don't 'get it'. This isn't North American golf..don't expect the dazzlingly green manicured fairways of Pebble Beach. What you DO get is a VERY challenging round in a brilliantly designed course with a deep storied history. The sand bunkers are second to none and the devilish placement of the water-strewn burns will have you fishing for balls regularly. It's a must-play on every golfers' bucket list.

“Tough and ugly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013

If this place were a steak it would be 16 ounce porterhouse you couldn't chew with iron teeth. The gun range next door never stopped with the target training for the army. I am glad to say I played it but wouldn't again.

“Magnificent but shabby”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

We played on the Championship Course in June. For golf afficionados this is a true test of golf. For average golfers it is overpriced and overcrowded. The town doesn't inspire on the approach to the course. The course is difficult and, when we visited, it was untidy. (Lots of divots). The hotel might look good on TV when the Open is played here but it's really shabby outside. (Didn't bother sampling the wares) (See another review for Corner House Restaurant which is nearby). There is none of the attention to detail, none of the warm welcome and no sign of anyone working on the course, that can be found at St Andrews. No comparison. It took over 5 hours to play (3 players) because of the number of players on the course. Disappointing waste of a lot of money!

Thank you for taking the time to review CGL and we are disappointed that your experience was different from the vast majority. I am unable to make comment on your thoughts about the town and the Carnoustie Hotel which is a separate business and responsible for their own areas. Regarding your comments directly at CGL I am surprised you didn't get a good welcome as we a Concierge at the door, Golf Professionals at check in and also someone on the 1st tee to welcome you and give advice on course markings and so on. You wouldn't see any greenkeeping staff as we try to have them work very early so that there is no/little interference for the golfer so I presume that is a good thing? Re pricing CGL maintains a process to price ourselves at less than our peer group ie Open Championship venues and less than many 2nd tier courses too. For value you can play all 3 courses at Carnoustie for less than some lesser rated courses in Scotland charge for one round. Whilst it is disappointing that your round took 5 hours it is not due to overcrowding as we space our tee times generously. Popular yes, overcrowded no but we do pride ourselves on accessibility to tee times which some do not. Finally the course condition has been regularly acknowledged by Professional bodies as being the finest in Scotland with fast and true running greens. Divots do happen and often in common areas. We employ a divot squad who fill these divots on a daily basis before golfers tee off. I am sorry the experience did not live up to your expectations but thank you for your own feedback.
