Owner description: Arbroath Abbey is a testament to the dynamic piety of Scotland’s medieval monarchs. It was founded in 1178 by King William I ‘the Lion’ as a memorial to his childhood friend Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was murdered in 1170.

“Arbroath Abbey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

The historical scene is well displayed in spacious surroundings. Arbroath town grew around the abbey, hence its importance. The 'Round O' is seen as a reminder all round the town. The people in the reception/shop are welcoming and enthusistic .

“It is all in the history!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

The history of the abbey is more interesting than the abbey itself!
However, Arbroath is en route to many Scottish destinations, and is worth a visit, if only for its smokies!

“Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

Good historic place and well mantained too, it will give a good insight of the old monastic life and how Arbroath was. It's attended by Hystoric Scotland. It's £5,50 ticket for an adult.

“Excellent Modern Visitor Centre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

Great recent modern visitor centre with historic time-line display & videos, a few artefacts, great upstairs exhibition space with light up model of Abbey as it once stood, as well as an innovative 3D film 'walking' through the Abbey. Some of the information is a little bit repetitive being covered in videos, then repeated in the wall displays.
Outside there are of course the ruins, with a few towers to climb, (not for the very large or unfit) and some partially restored interiors for example the Abbot's House.
Not really a full day's outing really, but good for an afternoon trip.
