“Last minute Easter break”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

The hotel is beautiful & very welcoming with roaring open fires & very friendly staff. It looks recently refurbished & is very well decorated with beautiful reception rooms & nice grounds. Our privilege room was on the first floor. Although well decorated, it wasn't very spacious & I had difficulty identifying what extras we had, apart from a coffee machine. The bathroom looked recently refurbished with a nice big shower. The main problem with our room was it was located at the service alley so was very noisy. On both nights we were woken at 6am with bins being wheeled about & deliveries arriving. On the first night we were woken at midnight with someone sawing! The bedroom window was frosted (obviously as the view wasn't up to much!) so the room did feel a bit claustrophobic.
Onto the positives, although the spa/pool is a bit run down it was a nice place to chill out for a couple of hours. As well as breakfast, we ate in the brasserie & the food was very nice.
I think if we'd had another room we would have enjoyed our stay much more. The staff made our stay the more enjoyable as they were very friendly & helpful. The hotel had a lovely atmosphere

I stayed here for one night and stayed in the Blair Suite which is in the old part of the building. The suite as amazing, decorated in black and gold. The room itself was very spacious with lovely views and the suite came with its own mini living room with sofa and television and mini bar. The bathroom was spacious also. Only downside was the power of the shower but it just meant showering was a little longer which is no big deal. I ate in the restaurant at night and the meal was lovely. Service could not be faulted and everything arrived at a good pace, with a good gap between starters and main course. I then had cocktails in the bar and they again were lovely. The Blair Suite is very quiet and I had a very good sleep. I used the pool and thought it was good. The staff at reception were very helpful with directions etc and I would definitely come back here to stay or even for a meal. The hotel is set away from town centre so it was lovely for peace and quiet.

We were given this deal as an anniversary gift and were really looking forward to it.
Driving alongside the river Dee the signpost indicates the Mercure hotel but it takes you by surprise the first time you drive in as it is a sweeping bend.
The building is old, with turrets, looks very impressive, castle-like.
Walking in you are met with a huge fire, some very impressive chairs and then the reception.
The staff were great, very accommodating and friendly.
We were initially given one of the modern rooms on the second floor further back in the building, key card entry.
Room was fine, double bed, 2 seater sofa, TV, hairdryer, tea/coffee facilities, decent sized wardrobe and modern bathroom with over bath shower.
Unfortunately the room was cold so we asked for a heater which was provided immediately. The bed was soft and sagged in the middle, extremely uncomfortable and not a good night's sleep. Mentioned to reception the next morning and the American girl was great, offered me first one key to check the room and bed out and then another.
We ended up moving to room 1, just above reception. This was an older, much bigger room with the traditional high ceilings. The bed was 2 singles put together; firmer, a much better sleep. The bathroom seemed very new, separate bath and large shower cubicle. The only let down was a cracked window.
Had a problem with the shower drain blocking but they sent someone up straight away to unblock it for us.
We were told upon arrival about the 'link corridor' that took you to the spa.... we followed this and got lost, ending up in a function suite. Retracing our steps we found the last sign was near a fire exit, so thought we would try it. So to get to the spa you have to walk outside... worth noting when it is snowing!
The spa had a gym, full sized swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.
We had planned to spend most of our break relaxing there, BUT the pool was FREEZING! This was due to a fault in the heating they said, meaning the overall atmosphere was cold, and a shock to the system when going for a swim after the steam room! Cold changing rooms too... and this is when we have snow in March.
The sauna was nice, good size, thermometers don't work though. Steam door didn't shut properly so kept going cold. Hot tub pretty shallow when in cold air from chest up. (10 min on /off timer)The pool area and changing rooms looking tired with flaking paint and the pool needed a clean. We only stayed an hour in the spa and decided against a massage, though average prices. As this was the whole reason for our booking here it was disappointing.
Breakfast was buffet, good selection, hot and no complaints at all, looked at dinner and bar menu, set menu looked pretty good and £34 for 2 courses was not bad, but we decided to eat out.
The carpets and curtains are all nice and new, well looked after and in general paintwork looks good and the hotel had a nice feel when you walked in. But, seemed to lack something; the bigger room had similar furniture to the smaller one, so felt pretty big and empty. Scuffs on walls and doors took away from the overall presentation. The grounds could be lovely but didn't seem too well cared for, maybe this was due to the long winter?

Room Tip: If going for the older rooms at the front of the hotel you will have to take the stairs. The newer...

Thank you for your recent feedback, please accept my apologies for the problems you encountered on this occasion, specifically with the spa. We did have mechanical problems at this time which have now been repaired, we made the decision to keep the area open rather than close it until the new parts had arrived. Im sure you can appreciate that these things do happen from time to time and are somewhat outwith our control, that being said I apologise for any inconvenience caused. I have written to you directly to address your feedback in more detail.

Kind regards

Stayed for two nights 20-22 March 2013. A very nice hotel comfortable bed and quite large rooms
and not to expensive for Aberdeen. I only ate breakfast, one small complaint could have been hotter I appreciate the reasons behind buffet breakfasts but you still have to keep it hot. The staff were very pleasant and polite. I will definatley stay again the next time I am in Aberdeen

Room Tip: All depends on how much you want to pay, but I think no matter were your room is it will be quiet du...

Popped up for a family wedding at this hotel at the weekend. What a stunning location and grounds! Taken over by Mercure, a French Chain, this Scottish hotel is castle-like with original features authentically restored. The entrance to the hotel boasts two large stone dogs, an indicator that pets are allowed. A beautiful hearth with a roaring open fire greeted us on entry. An impressive entrance hall, vestibule and reception area with period furniture and real wood panelling and carvings created a very positive first impression of a building which appeared to have a lot of history. We did not use the pool and spa but would hope to next time we visit.
Our room for three was spacious and comfortable with lovely views over the surrounding Scottish countryside.
Service was very good and staff were pleasant, helpful but also discrete.
The food we had at the wedding reception was a cut above the norm...........haggis balls (there's a joke there somewhere) with red cabbage was very tasty. Main course of beef, fondant potato, quinelle of mash, carrot puree and green beans was good. Personally not so keen on the wild mushroom fricasee. Delicious dessert of lemon cheesecake...zingy and sweet at the same time. A set menu for the wedding but each of us was asked personally if we had any special dietary requirements. If your preference was chips with tomato ketchup then yes...it was available. Palatable red and white wines flowed freely as did soft drinks and good Scottish water.
The breakfast buffet the next day was beautifully laid out with a wide selection of fruits, juices, cereals, hot food, cheese and dairy, continental meats, and bakery. Minor observation...for me the cooked food selection could have been hotter. Again eaten in beautiful surroundings with an open outlook over the gardens, the woods and mountains beyond. We liked the layout of large circular tables for eight or more which encouraged lively debate and discussion over breakfast.
And the key question...would we come back? Most certainly...without hesitation. The Auld Alliance lives on.........!

Room Tip: First Floor rooms near lifts good for those with mobility difficulties if none on the ground floor a...

I was recently at a fund raising event held here. It was really professionally organised. The food was very good and everything ran like clock work. The waiters were very attentive. It's a little bit tricky to find in the dark driving. I have been a few times and always take the wrong turn off but I got there in the end.

I recently stay in the hotel and had no expectations at all. I was here for business (conference in the hotel), so a perfect combination. Comfortable rooms, nice bars, good choices for food, lovely wines....and don't forget....a good accomodation for conferences. A word of thank to all the staff, especially Erika, who made you feel at home. I will surely recommend this hotels to others.

Room Tip: Room 147, a long walk but worthy. Quiet and a marvellous view
