“Please improve!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

Living close by, I have tried rock salt and snails on several occasions in the hope that problems were one offs. However, basic problems detract from what could be a really great cafe.

I appreciate that when serving fresh produce, things may run out, but would still expect the kitchen to be sufficiently stocked to have more than 3 lunch options available (out of more than a dozen). Despite this, on another occasion I was served salad which was far past it's best and very unappetising.

Cleanliness does not seem to be a priority. The preparation areas could do with a good scrub and simple things like regularly sweeping the floor (especially after toddlers have thrown food around) would make a vast improvement. Clearing the tables (especially downstairs) doesn't seem like too much to ask but apparently was to the waitress who informed us that they are only three staff on duty as though that should make it acceptable for us to eat our lunch in a mess of someone else's leftovers.

Agree with previous reviewers that the downstairs area is disappointing. It completely lacks atmosphere and feels as though you are eating in a store room rather than the cafe itself. The floor gives the appearance of being covered in food, a simple lick of paint would freshen this area up. Perhaps some music playing, pictures on the walls, etc would help..

The cafe is always busy, which I can't really understand, perhaps like me, people return in the hope of improvement as there are few alternatives nearby. Despite always being busy, it seems they try to get by with an absolute minimum number of staff on duty meaning that simple tasks like clearing tables aren't done routinely.

The cafe has the makings of being great, but I won't be returning for further disappointment unless improvements are made.

“Service so bad, I left!!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013 via mobile

I stood watching a 'new' girl (she kept saying!) fumble an order in front of me. I'd dashed in for a take away coffee - a less than 5 minute job! She stuffed up the order in front, no one helped her, the queue was forming, no apologies made, no extra hands on deck.
Another assistant told the lady in front of me that her order will be on hold as she dared to order a sandwich before 12!!! Shocking eh?!
So frustrated on lack of service, I left!!!

“poor service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

I went in to Rocksalt & snails for the firts and probably the last, the staff were more interested in yapping than seeing to customers needs. Also the hygiene was not as i would expect!! whilst i was waiting i was glancing around the place and noticed behind the counter area was grotty, the tiles were dirty as was the area where one member of staff was sorting out dirty dishes, also the dishwasher (i think ) was dirty and grubby looking , it just generally looked grubby , the seating area was tidy of sorts and i had a peek downstairs and it looked a bit better, the food i ordered was lovely, that was the only nice thing i can say about the place, the staff need to be better organised as no one seemed to know what they were doing, and they used tiny post its to take the orders and were getting all confused?? , it is such a shame about the cleaniness of the place and the disorganised staff because from the outside it looks lovely and the food is nice, but personally the cleanliness or lack of it puts me off going back

“Upstairs, downstairs, chalk and cheese.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013 via mobile

The upstairs part of the restaurant was buzzing with a nice ambiance, loads of families enjoying the food on offer. Downstairs where we ended up was extremely different. It was like sitting in a workroom, the back area was curtained off and I assume food was being prepared behind, also a chilled display counter with only a few stored items took centre stage. The area lacked any character , style or ambiance and the staff appeared from time to time asking patrons sitting at the tables if they had ordered the plates of food they were carrying, surely a ordering system would be easy to organise. The food when it arrived was very good but spoiled by the seating area's lack of character or style. They are obviously using what appears to be part of an old store or retail area as an overspill area, this however does not excuse the lack of order or ambiance in a place where the food is good but overpriced and the basement area certainly lacks style. Would I return, not to the basement.

We had decided that this would be just the right place for lunch on the last day of our holiday in the area and we were very disappointed on a number of scores.Initially there appears to be a lot of choice on the menu on the blackboard, however nothing particularly special jumped out to us. We opted to share bread and dipping oils and expected bread of a higher standard than the very tasteless , part baked baguette that was served. The same artificial bread arrived with my main of goats cheese salad with chilli sauce. This was supposed to come with salad but this consisted of a few leaves and ONE ring of red onion. And that was it for the salad. My husband ordered the last portion of roasted cumin and beetroot soup, which he enjoyed despite the unappetizing appearance. We were intending to stay for coffee and cakes, but thankfully chose to go 2 minutes down the road to the much friendlier and more comfortable Bothy coffee shop.
