Being from the south, where fish is cheap, nasty and of the frozen variety, the Ashvale was a welcome treat. I was in Aberdeen for just four days and it was at the Ashvale that I had my first meal on Scottish soil.. and my last. I was a very satisfied customer!
For a sit-down meal, I felt that each of the items on the extensive menu offered good value for money. On my first visit, a standard sized piece of haddock with chips and peas cost around £9.00. Returning a few days later, the appropriately named 'whale' (haddock, again with chips and mushy peas) was £12.95. The Ashvale whale is actually a challenge and any customer who can clear their plate (and the 1lb piece of haddock) gets the same meal again for free or something from the dessert menu. There's no denying that the challenge was a bit of a struggle for me but I just about managed it along with the complimentary sticky toffee pudding!
The service was faultless. We were offered a nice warm welcome and seated immediately. On both occasions, we were looked after by older members of the team. It was great to see workers well into their sixties and seventies holding the fort and doing such a great job of it. Aside from ensuring that our food arrived in good time, all of them were keen to make conversation about the food and even the weather, which, at the time, was pretty good!
I am already looking forward to another Ashvale whale when I next return to Aberdeen!
