“Great hostel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2012

This is my favorite hostel that I have stayed at! It has such great atmosphere, and a lovely common area with a fireplace where everybody hangs out. The staff was very friendly and helpful and made me feel like I was part of the family. The bathrooms, showers, and rooms were all very clean and nice. It is a great location, very close to all of the historic sites in Derry and near the museums and murals. And only a 5 minute walk to a local pub that has traditional Irish music every night.

Dear Guest

Thanks so much for the positive review and compliments. The roaring fire-place in the drawing room each evening really is lovely, I agree.

Good luck with the rest of your travels, we'll be happy to welcome you back to our cosy hostel anytime in the future.

Thanks for visiting Historic Derry

We stayed here last month because of these reviews but I would have to say that we would put our score much nearer the bottom than the top. You sometimes scratch your head about how things can be so different from reviews. I've learned to start from the worst ones first!!

The bottom floor of the hostel is pretty nice but when you go upstairs things went downhill. The staff seemed to be a bit clueless. None of the toilets were flushing and nobody seemed to know anything about fixing them. You could not swing a cat in the 6 bed dorm. There should have been only 2 sets of bunks in there instead of 3.. We left after only one night. Derry was great though. We ended up staying 3 more nights and coming back again for our last night.. Sandinos is a brilliant bar with loads of way cool people.

Dear Guest

Thanks for the comments. You mention reviews have you "scratching your head" and with respect, your review has the same effect on me. It is totally out of sync with every review we have had these last 5 months since our big refurbishment. All of which have been excellent.

Regardless of that we'll take your views on board - you're right the 6 bed drom is tight, there is no doubt, but that is why it only costs £8 - £9 to stay there, we have much more spacious 4 bed dorms and also private rooms - these were available for you to book at a little extra cost

You say 'none of the toilets would flush' - we have 12 toilets in total, did you try to flush each one? Of course not. So why exaggerate and say they all would not flush, which is NOT true. Only 1 toilet had a flushing problem.
Tourists must be careful to report things accurately on tripadvisor.com, this is a moral and ethical neccessity.

Im sorry you found the staff 'clueless', I dont find them to be clueless and find them very professional and most importantly professinal... you obviously werent talking or interacting with me as I am certainly not clueless, I have 15 years experience in backpacker hostels and top class customer service skills.

Anyway, we wish you well. It seems our hostel just wasnt right for you and IS right for hundreds of others. Sorry about that.

Happy Travels

From the time you walk in the door you are welcomed as a friend not just a guest. The atmosphere is super cozy - the lounge a great place to just relax or talk with friends.

The facilities are clean (kitchen was spotless!) and the bathrooms have just been done up (yes, new showers!) The bunks are comfortable and warm.

The location is superb - super safe and a five minute walk away from the sights and close enough to get home after a night out without much worry. 10minute walk to the bus station/shopping centre. 15minute walk to the train station.

Always great craic and lovely people and can't wait to return.

It was my first time coming up to Derry with my girlfriend. I had a great stay thanks to the warm welcome received at Paddys palace. The hostel is a v short walk from the city centre and some good bars and places to eat. The staff who at Paddys gave us great advice on seeing the main city sights which are all within walking distance too. The place is very clean and warm, with comfy beds and warm too with a homely common area. Clean showers, safe roadside parking, good breakfast service, thanks guys we will be back up in the summer again hopefully to do some trekking round Derry

Quite frankly, this place is too nice to be called a hostel. Yes, there are shared dorm rooms (probably individual rooms too - I'm not sure) but that is about where the comparison with a hostel ends. It has just had a big revamp and looks more like a gorgeous, stately B&B. You'll be invited to go out and enjoy the great local nightlife, Irish music, etc, but it might be hard to tear yourself away from the fabulous living room. Relaxing sofas, big modern TV, chandeliers, and a great crew of staff. Importantly for me, cleanliness is really important to the people here. I found that in most of Ireland and the UK the quality of hostels was pretty poor, so I was pretty excited to stay at such a nice one in Derry.

Welcoming, helpful and accommodating international lot.
More importantly: this is the case time and time again, so wonderfully consistent! THANKS! :)
....and nicely redone recently. What else could you ask for?!

Room Tip: I do not think it makes much difference.

We really liked Paddy´s staff. They were absolutely great and welcoming. They were giving us directions in town. They even took us out to a great Irish Pub with live music and invited us to a Party at Paddy´s later.

We definitely had a awesome stay in Derry! Thank you guys!

Kathrin
