Spent a few days mid-week up in the 'Maiden City' (Derry) at the beginning of March 2013.
The weather was very good - no rain, blue sky but a bit chilly. Still, the city looked lovely, the new 'Peace Bridge' was beautiful and the City Hotel was excellent. When booking, we'd asked for a room with a river view and we received same at no extra cost.
In 2013, Derry is 'City of Culture' (their theme seems to be 'Let's make it LegenDerry'). And everyone appears to be working very hard to make it a wonderful and memorable year.
We did all the 'touristy' things during the few days we were in the city - including walking around the famous city walls. The information panels dotted throughout this walk give an excellent insight into the incredible and diverse history of Derry. ('Derry' comes from the Irish 'Doire' meaning, I think, 'The Oak Grove')
Look for the little brass oak leaves embedded in the footpaths in the city's Diamond area.
In the shops and on the streets, everyone was friendly and helpful. And this attitude towards visitors also extended to the staff in the City Hotel. They were always attentive and appeared keen to ensure that our stay with them as a memorable one.
Our room was large and well-equipped. The breakfasts were buffet with the whole range required for a 'full-Irish' if you wanted that - but there was also plenty of alternatives if someone required something more continental.
We dined on one evening in the hotel dining room and, once again, the menu was both diverse and comprehensive. The food was served promptly and was excellent.
If you're planning to head for Derry this year, you couldn't do better that book into he City Hotel. But remember, there are some big (world-scale) events happening in the city in 2013 (see their website) and if you're intending to be in Derry around any of those times, them make sure you book your accommodation early.
Thanks to Derry and the City Hotel for such a lovely few days away from home.
