“Great hospitality, great food, beautiful setting, relaxing environment.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

I really enjoyed every aspect of my stay at the Enniskeen. My mountainside room had wonderful views of the mountains of Mourne. The room, with ensuite bathroom, was spotlessly clean and had all the comforts expected. Enjoyed the coffee and tea making facilities in the room too. A special highlight was the food. Really tasty, wholesome and unpretentious food. The quality of the meat dishes, in particular, was superb. The staff too were universally friendly and helpful with every query or request. You felt really valued, not just another guest.
The hotel itself is beautifully set in large private grounds and within a few minutes drive to Newcastle. I had much to occupy myself during my stay. Tullymore forest park is within a few minutes drive from the hotel. Golf, mountainbiking, pony trekking, hiking are just a few of the activities I discovered locally. A few days were spent relaxing around the hotel with a good book and a glass or two of wine! I hope to return again soon.

Room Tip: If you can book a room with a view to the mountains and or the sea!

We've had the bar menu there several times now. Top class food! Really love the homemade chicken and ham pie. Staff very friendly and courteous. The surroundings are superb. From the bar you've got great views of the mountains and there's a large garden with lots of trees.

We love going there for a meal even though we are probably some of their youngest clientele :)

Recommended.

I have been an annual visitor to the Enniskeen for over twenty years.
I have returned time and time again for many reasons:
- the setting is superb, nestled at the foot of the Mountains of Mourne, and within easy reach of Dundrum Bay, and the picturesque town of Newcastle:
- the residence has a wonderful feel of peaceful tranquillity, and the whole ambience is totally relaxing:
- the food is excellent, of highest quality and in abundance:
- above all the staff couldn't be more friendly or helpful or efficient.
I am due to visit again this June, and this I await with eager and joyful anticipation.
I cannot recommend a stay at the Enniskeen too highly.
If anyone is considering a holiday in County Down, then seriously consider this hotel as the perfect base for such a pleasure.

We were looking for a break with a difference and found it with Enniskeen's cycling mini-break ,mountain bikes and safety equipment supplied on site along with route map. Tullymore forest park is a couple of minutes away and a slight uphill cycle up the route of the Shimna river is worth it for a rewarding freewheel back down,we then carried on down the Bryansford road and into Newcastle for a walk around the shops and a cup of coffee at Davinci's (recommended) again an uphill cycle back to Enniskeen was worth the reward of a nice cold beer on the scenic terrace overlooking the hotel grounds and mournes backdrop.Staff at the hotel are attentive and friendly, food at the Enniskeen was delicious and our room (no.6) has an art nouveau bathroom suite (original) that has to be seen !! Thanks to the staff for a wonderful time and hope to be back in the near future.

A character filled grand house with majestic views. This place is not about 5 star anything. You get great people, wonderful. wholesome meals, fabulous breakfasts. Almost like home away from home. beds were comfortable. All the rooms are different, some with large bathrooms, some older, some new but all terrific. Would stay again in a heartbeat. Eileen and all the staff were wonderful. Real people and a real slice of Northern Ireland.

Room Tip: All rooms vary so best advice is to ask what type of rooms are available. Ask for a view towards the...

Overall, I would return and recommend it to people but with an explanation of its idiosyncracies.
Location: Excellent - 1.5 miles out of Newcastle with beautiful views of the Mourne mountains and near Tullymore Forest Park.
Style/Character: The house was built around 150 years ago and has been a hotel for about 50 years. It looks like it had a makeover in the 1980s and not updated much since. While it is spotlessly clean, it is crying out for a subtle revamp. It does have a loyal, albeit ageing, clientelle.
Service: It's run by the same family that opened it 50 years ago and there is an oldfashioned, genteel, discreet service. The bar-man and boss, Ian, wears a dickey bow to serve drinks. There is a rather strange lady, who hovers about and at 10pm blocked me from going into the Residents Lounge because apparantly it's private at that time of night.
Rooms: It's a boutique hotel with around 27-30 rooms. We were in room 8 and over the two nights grew to really love it. It was small but comfortable. The bed was a good height off the ground and had lovely, crisp-white sheets. The TV was tiny. There was a lovely, ivy lined terrace but the door leading out on to it was locked! I wanted to know why and was told it was down to health and safety.
Food/Drink: Breakfast and dinner both fantastic. Great, affordable, constantly updated wine list. There was a buzz to the place on Saturday night when people came to the hotel to eat that weren't overnight guests. The dessert list was excellent but some of the menu could have done with a bit of an update (starters included melon fan and egg mayonnaise).
