“OKish.......”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

Stayed here as attending a recent wedding

Positives : Plenty of car parking, looks nice from outside, good open fire downstairs, OK dinner (v good starter, good mains (gravy boat along with dinner & server who would as if anything else was required would help - no staff approached our table to ask if everything was Ok or if we required anything), good dessert)) (good evening buffet), heating works in bedroom and good thermostat, warmest duvet cover ever (which was required), breakfast was OK, building was very cold but heating was on all night so not so bad, rustic charm

Negatives : bedroom was located not in main building but in builing across court yard; half of which is a building site, ?builders walking about at 12 midnight- if not builders, i don't know who they were as they came out of the building site across our landing just before midnight, building is not yet sealed to the elements so come out of bedroom and basically you're into a building site, cobwebs and resident spiders shared our bedroom :(, windows need cleaned, shower not working (not sure if this would be because others in the building would have been showering at the same time and maybe affected water availability/pressure), resident cat in the building made me wonder if it's there to catch mice, duvet smelled of stale sweat and had a wee bit of dirt although the sheets were pristine and i just folded the top of the sheet down over duvet to cover the smell of sweat, lack of light bulbs (in lampshade above our table at dinner and in lightling in bedroom), poor finishes in bathroom...

Overall i prob wouldn't go back to stay at this hotel, it's a lovely building which prob needs mega £££ to bring it up to any standard ...it has lots of potential.....can't be compared to your usual types of accommodation.....not worth £80 for 1 night stay at this point in time

Room Tip: Maybe the main building ?? Def wouldn't stay in the outbuilding across courtyard

In reply to your recent reveiw on Ballydugan Mill, First of all we would like to state is we have never had workmen working to 12 midnight and never will have. As for your building site comment this is a grade A listed building and we are trying to bring the granary back to its former glory, The restoration of a 200 year old listed building just doesn't happen over night, Anyone with a conservation background would understand.

As for the cat comment, We are a family run businness and yes we live here and have 2 cats which has never been a issue before.

Our customer care, cleanliness and servis in general is paramount to our success and we would never jepordize our business is such a way. If you had a problem why didn't you come to reception ,are say on checkout. We had a full house of guests the night of your friends wedding, All the family and bride and groom commented the next moring on how much of a wonderful day they had, Anyone can read our guests comments book and judge for themselves.

I went to a wedding and stayed 1 night, the hotel is very nice, cute cozy rooms and the staff couldn't be more friendly, real Irish welcome :) nice breakfast and a great venue for a wedding. I would recommend this hotel and I would love to be back soon.

We went to my daughters wedding here 29th September, I filled the guest book in as Fantastic, what i should of wrote was PERFECT. We were running slightly late getting there, we had no grief checking in, Mary just gave us our room key. Mary made sure we knew what we were doing, the service went down without a hitch. The reception was up on the next level, the meal was to die for, thanks chef and team. The dancing was held on the floor above. The rooms were of a very high standard and a very good nights sleep was had, followed by a lovely breakfast. We can't thank Noel and his Staff enough for a superb and relaxing time we had here.(Richard O'Sullivan)

I had never heard of Ballydugan Mill before until a friend of mine suggested we go and have a look at it as a potential wedding venue. We had been round all the usual hotels and although they were all lovely, they were all a bit clinical and just didn't have that 'something special'.

As soon as the Mill appeared from behind the trees as we drove along the little country road, we knew that this place was something special - the whole site has such a great presence with the 7 storey mill building towering above you and the large brick chimney stack adding loads of historical character!

When we got inside, we were greeted by Maureen who was very helpful, friendly, chatty and easy to get on with. Nothing was too much trouble and she showed us around the building, answering all our questions and making us feel at ease.

The whole building has been lovingly and painstakingly restored, retaining the true character of the Mill with the beautiful stone walls, wooden floors and original beams. This place has so much character and atmosphere! We knew pretty much instantly that this was where we wanted to get married.

We had our wedding here on Saturday 8th September and it was everything we could have hoped for and more! The staff were very friendly and helpful, including Mary who was an absolute star on the day before the wedding when my sister and I were getting the room setup. Mary seemed to be doing about 10 jobs all at once, as well as tending to all our needs, and always with a smile on her face and a genuine interest in everything we had to say.

In the lead up to the wedding, Maureen was so helpful and patient. She must have been sick of getting so many emails and phone calls, but she was always so very accommodating. On the night before the wedding, many of our guests who had travelled from Scotland and England were staying at the hotel. Maureen and Mary were central to making everyone feel really welcome and I hear the craic was flowing!

The day of the wedding went so smoothly and seemed to flow with an effortless precision. Maureen kindly agreed to be our Master of Ceremonies and did a fantastic job! The food was delicious - so well cooked - and most of our Guests made comments to me about how nice it all was and what healthy portions were served up! Noone was left wanting for more! And a special thanks to the chef who very kindly agreed to prepare a recipe of our choosing for our vegetarian guests, who thoroughly enjoyed it and said that it tasted better than their version!

We partied quite late into the night, so we didn't get to spend much time in our honeymoon suite, but the room was lovely. My only complaint was that the electric shower was a bit unpredictable and ran hot and cold - which didn't make for a very enjoyable experience! The room was also a little bit cold, but apart from that, I can't really complain at all!

Overall, we had a fabulous wedding and much of this was thanks to the way all the staff at the Mill conducted themselves and worked so well together to create a great atmosphere, great food and great fun for everyone! Thank you!

Could not recommend this wedding venue more. If u are looking for a relaxed and slightly different type of wedding this is for you. Staff were super friendly and welcoming to all our wedding guests, the food was excellent and the venue itself is just magical.

We attended a wedding here in August. It's a really nice venue and location for a wedding, quaint with lovely stone work and exposed beams everywhere. The service was held on the ground floor, food was served on the first floor and entertainment held on the second floor. The food was all vegetarian as the bride and groom were veggies but it was all very nice only the mashed potatoes were quite salty for my taste.
We stayed for the night also. We arrived early for check in but this was not a problem and were we able to check in no problem. Except the man at reception checked us in to an un-serviced room! But this was easily and quickly fixed by a member of housekeeping. The room was lovely although not loads of space for storage but for one night it was fine. Bathroom was spacious with a bath and over-head shower and plenty of toiletries. The walls are obviously not sound proof so noises from other rooms were easily heard but this was mainly the drunken wedding party!
Breakfast was held on the ground floor. The fry was great- no complaints. There wasn't a massive selection for a continental breakfast if that's all you're after though.
Great little hotel tucked away in a lovely location in Co.Down.

Had lunch today at The Mill, the food as usual was fantastic, plenty of flavours, well cooked and presented. Service very good and staff are very friendly. Elaine's a sweetheart. The building has been lovingly restored by the owner Noel who is busy renovating part of the old mill to be living quarters for him and his wife Joan. An excellent location for weddings etc.
