We have eaten at Deanes on a number of occasions but most recently left feeling dissatisfied with what we felt was a below standard food and service. Worse, no one seems to care including Michael Deane.
1. The waitress didn't know what the lobster thermidore on the menu was and equally disappointingly tried to bluff her way rather than finding out for us. In fairness the lobster mayonnaise was a lovely dish.
2. We had the T-bone steak (cooked exactly as requested) and accompanied with an excellent Bearnaise sauce. However, the chips were very brown, soggy and totally limp with no crunch. Far short of the triple cooked chips that we have experienced in Deanes before. When the waitress asked if anything was okay, I explained why we were disappointed and she said that she would "let them know". We saw her informing the maitre d'. However, we weren't engaged with again until the plates were being cleared by the maitre d'. He asked if everything was okay and we explained our disappointment with the chips. He didn't acknowledge that they were substandard but rather said that the reason the chips were different was that the chef was now using beef fat rather than duck fat. Heston Blumenthal reckons that the perfect triple cooked crunchy chip can be made with vegetable, beef or duck fat as long as the cooking temperatures are correct!
In truth the minor matter of the below standard chips could very simply have been addressed by providing proper chips, offering an alternative (e.g. Champ) given time constrains, or at the very least not charging us for the extra portion of chips which we had eagerly ordered. Instead, the issue wasn't dealt with but rather we were fobbed off. Not something you'd expect at this level of restaurant.
3. When we wrote to Michael Deane simply relaying our experience we didn't even receive an acknowledgement of receipt of the letter.
It seems no one cares and I fear the slide will no doubt continue. Pity, it was good.
