I invariably do a hop on/ hop off tour when visiting a new city and have been City Sightseeing Tours elsewhere – largely as they are so widely available and, as on this occasion because it is often possible to obtain a discount on tickets when booking alongside something else, such as accommodation.
I was on a very short trip and had also had some travel delays, so was finding it difficult to arrange my schedule and decide which attractions I should prioritise for a visit, particularly as the buses only operate half hourly and end at around 4pm, whilst many of the attractions have limited tours, often an hour each and ending at 3pm. To assist me, I relied heavily on the City Sightseeing staff for advice and guidance, for example on where and when I might pick up a tour half way through and their recommendations for the best attractions. They were immensely helpful.
However, I felt that much of this would have been unnecessary had City Sightseeing improved the information available both in printed form and on the internet. This would include simple measures such as covering the full year in information about the seasons! (On the leaflet these were covered for the periods to March and after May but somehow April was completely omitted, which happened to be the month I was there). Furthermore, a comprehensive timetable for when buses might arrive at each stop and information about the attractions themselves including costs, tour times etc, and perhaps even some suggested itineraries, would really have enhanced the experience and made it a lot easier to plan.
As for the content of the tour itself, the guides were very professional and shared plenty of interesting information on the city’s sights. I particularly enjoyed touring and viewing some of the murals and gaining a little more understanding on what life was like during the political struggles. I would have liked more depth on this, but recognise it could not be fitted in the scope of such a tour, and that there are specialist operators for this. The buses are reasonable although I think could be improved. It was unfortunate that reaching Stormont required travel on a section of dual carriageway. The bus really struggled and became extremely noisy on the lower floor, where I was seated, to the extent that I was completely unable to hear the commentary.
All this said, I felt the tour was a good way to get a quick overview of the city and is definitely a good activity for a short break.
