“Very chic and stylish”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Overall, a high quality hotel and great staff. I would recommend it highly, but there are a couple of issues. 1) The doors to the bedrooms bang shut, (partially for security reasons) but should really be fixed to close quietly, you will be woken up as each guest leaves their room. 2) Breakfast is good, but for the price some good quality bread should be the bare minimum 3) Towels are below the quality one would expect. Small improvements would make a truly great hotel rather than only great,

Hotel was recomended to me, and I was blown away by all aspects of it, as were my entire team. Based in an old bank building, the common areas were spectacular, and this standard was matched by the rooms, and also the service. The rooftop jacuzzi was an added bonus. A wonderful city centre hotel, offering excellent value for the standard offered.

My sisters 50th Birthday was the special occasion & The Merchant lived up to its reviews.
We were made to feel special. Nothing was too much bother.
Balloons & chocolates in my sisters room, was a lovely touch.
We will definitely go back.

The Hotel
The hotel is part converted bank, part modern extension. All communal areas are beautifully maintained, as are the guest rooms. Staff are welcoming, and we were provided with a good orientation prior to being shown to our rooms. The Victorian styled rooms were nice, albeit quite small, with all the usual inclusions of tea & coffee, slippers, robes, etc.

Bars and Restaurants
Although we didn't dine in the hotel, there are three main options - their formal restaurant (with stunning gold leaf ceiling), a jazz bar (Bertie's) and a wine bar (The Cloth Ear). The service at the hotel's main cocktail bar was attentive, however the cocktails themselves quite average. See my separate reviews of The Bar and The Cloth Ear for further details.

Noise
Ear plugs are provided by the hotel, and upon retiring to our rooms at 10pm, it was clear to 'hear' why. Both our rooms were located on Level 1, immediately above one of the hotel's bars and across the road from another. The noise was reported to the front desk, who then visited the primary offender and successfully had it reduced. However a base noise (made worse by the wooden ceiling in the bar below) continued and even with subsequent phone calls to the desk did not cease until midnight. Upon discussing with the Duty Manager in the morning, they were initially quite dismissive - only upon pressing was a discount on the room then given.

In summary, the hotel is luxurious and is in a great central location, however the noise is the loudest we'd experienced of any 5 star city hotels worldwide. If you are staying, I HIGHLY recommend ensuring you are allocated a quiet room - although with bars on 3 sides of the hotel am unsure this is possible.

Stayed for one night and loved it. The room was beautiful, staff are fantastic and their customer service is brilliant. Other hotels should take note. From the porter who takes your bag to your room the customer service never varies. Bar staff, waiting staff and reception staff could not be more helpful, polite or kind. We always recommend The Merchant and will definitely be back.

We stayed here for 3 nights in the Macneice suite. I would highly recommend upgrading to a suite. The room was spacious and well appointed and the bed was terrific. We had daily breakfast included in our rate and that too was delicious. Most places offer buffets, but here It was a cooked to order breakfast which was nice. The hotel is convenient to Victoria square and many area restaurants too although we had a very good dinner in the great room too. Overall if you are staying in Belfast, this is a great place to stay. They have a spa n gym also but was too busy touring to use.
