“Waste of time and money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2012

I bought tickets for The Darker Side of Belfast Hallowe'een Ghost Bus Tour through a daily deal site. The tickets were £8 per person which I thought was reasonable. My dad and I went last night and I have never been so disappointed or embarrassed that such a tour is being allowed to run. Upon alighting the poorly decorated and tacky "Ghost bus" which had flashing blue lights inside and a handful of small glow in the dark skeletons hung from the ceiling, we were greated by two amateur dramatic students with personal hygiene issues. They were shouting random nonsense "Do you want to hold my microphone?" "Do you want to touch my Bible?" and getting into peoples faces. I have no idea what their purpose was being on the bus bringing us to the graveyard where the tour was going to start. They made people feel uncomfortable and dread the experience somewhat, and it set the tone of the tour as amateur and poorly organised. Upon arriving at the church and graveyard (which was actually creepy and perfect setting for a ghost tour) we were met by our guide (who was chewing on a plastic arm because he liked to eat people...?) who walked us around the graveyard and told possibly 2 ghost stories. There was a random man dressed in black who kept running around the graveyard squawking in a feeble attempt to spook the "guests" after each story (of which there were possibly only 3, at most 4), and one other story teller whose ghost story was not well orchestrated or delivered.

Overall, I am horrified that people are paying full price for this tour. It was neither scary nor interesting. It seemed hastily organised with poor story tellers who seemed to be improvising on the spot. Given the other tours that are operating in Belfast, this company could certainly use some direction in how to deliver interesting ghost stories without the amateur fancy dress, how to treat paying customers and at the very least addressing the hygiene issues of the students they choose to employ.

“Interesting and amusing walking tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

We are Belfast locals and took this tour as part of an offer from a daily deal website.

Joe, the tour guide has been taking tours in Belfast for more than 20 years, has a keen interest in history, a good sense of humour and knows his subject.

The tour involves walking round various parts of the city centre (mainly the Cathedral quarter) with stops at various points to tell us interesting tales. While factually accurate, the stories are of human interest too. We learn where the first carbomb in the world was set off, where the phrase "pi$$ poor" came from, the location of Belfast's first hospital (which was ahead of it's time) etc.

The tour would be of interest to both locals and visitors to Belfast. The material is interesting and quirky enough to keep even those who have only the most passing interest in history entertained.
