“Tasty food and cocktails!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2014

I have to admit that I am a fan of both branches of Zen, although this was my first visit to the smaller outlet in the Cathedral Quarter.

I opened with the fried squid starter, which was very well cooked and tasty, but would have benefited from the addition of a dipping sauce.

Main course was the signature steak, which comes sizzling in a wasabi pepper sauce... It was sensational! The same dish is available in the main Zen outlet with a monkfish base, which in my opinion is even better, but the steak works very well also.

Cocktails are another major strength of the Zen experience.. They aren't cheap, but their menu features a number of unique drinks expertly put together.

All in all a highly recommended experience!

“Probably the best Chinese meal I've ever had”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2014

Ate at House of Zen last Friday night for my partner's birthday. The interior of the restaurant is great - very modern with a Chinese twist, and the staff are very welcoming and friendly. The selection on the menu is wide and will cater for most tastes if you like Chinese - they have the standard curries and sweet and sour-sort of dishes as well as a number of house specials. We didn't go for a starter but I had the House of Zen Signature Steak for main course - absolutely fantastic, probably one of the nicest sit-down meals in a Chinese restaurant that I've ever had. The steak was cooked to perfection - three pieces of fillet with a wonderful spicy Chinese pepper sauce. My partner had the Honey Chilli Chicken which was a little dry but when supplemented with a sauce on the side, it was perfect. The sides were also great - nice to see Garlic Saute potatoes available in a Chinese restaurant! Another great benefit is that when you ask for a pint of beer - you actually get a FULL pint (568ml) of beer due to it being served in a 600ml glass to accommodate for the head! The selection of cocktails is also great although maybe slightly on the pricey side at around £7 a pop. Will be visiting again

“Great value for lunch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

Went here for lunch and the menu was exactly the same as the evening menu but £9.50 for two courses, was amazing value. Food was piping hot and the flavours were fantastic. The restaurant was not overly busy and the service was superb. House of zen always seems much easier to get a table than Zen. We were all really pleased with our choices.

“Nice restaurant, great food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2014

First visit to this restaurant and went as a couple - the staff were very friendly and helpful, the menu and selection was great and the food was fantastic. The ONLY issue we had was that we felt rushed with our courses. I don't like to be waiting for ages between courses however it just seemed 'too' quick and almost felt like we were being hurried to get the table free again for the next customer.
Will still be returning as food and service was very good.
