The famous Falls Road is the main road through west Belfast in Northern Ireland. The neighbouring Shankill Road is predominantly loyalist which you can tell you are there by the red, white and blue curbside markings and union jacks flying on every street post. Both Shankill and the Falls Road are separated by peace lines. Some great things to see on the Falls Road, including the Bobby Sands mural. Bobby Sands lived from 9 March 1954 to 5 May 1981 as a volunteer for the Provisional Irish Republican Army. He was elected to the United Kingdom Parliament whilst on a hunger strike, fighting to regain the right of status for Irish political prisoners. He died on hunger strike while in HM Prison Maze.

If you have time, visit Bombay Street and the Clonard Martyr's Memorial Garden. It's not a large memorial garden but it is well constructed. There are three sections to it and in the central section is a large Celtic cross on a plinth, a large plaque attached to a wall and four flags. In the side sections are plaques and memorial benches. The memorial is dedicated to political prisoners and civilians from the Clonard area who were killed by Crown forces and loyalist murder gangs. Really is worth seeing. Keep your eye out for the Pat Finucane banner. He was a Human rights lawyer and was murdered in front of his wife and children on 12 February 1989 by the pro-British UDA. Pat had successfully challenged the British Government over several important human rights cases. One of those involved in his murder, Brian Nelson, was working for the Force Research Unit an undercover unit of British Military Intelligence. The Falls Road truly does take you back in time. You can almost feel history reach out to embrace you. It is a place for quiet reflection on the hardships many who live there faced during the Troubles.
