I am always a little sceptical of signs declaring an establishment to be the Best Indian Restaurant in wherever, but Archana is certainly worthy of the title. I had asked local Indians at various cultural events for advice on authentic restaurants here, and Archana was the name that had come up most often. We were looking for somewhere for dinner after a movie and dropped in on impulse, and I can't wait to get back. We ate Garam Masala Chicken, Dahl Punjabi and a side dish of Bhindi (okra). The chicken was fantastically spiced - light and fresh in a yoghurt-based sauce. The dahl was thick and tasty, with stronger spicing, while the bhindi was wonderfully fresh and not at all slimy as okra can be.
The restaurant is tastefully decorated and has great atmosphere. The service is helpful and friendly, and the owner is great to chat to.
Having spent the first 16 years of my life in India, I really appreciate authenticity. I also appreciate good, fresh food and great flavours. So it's heartening to find both in the centre of Belfast.
I can't wait to go back for a thali - there are amazing lunch time deals with a veg thali for just £3.50, with a range available in the evening at prices that are still reasonable.
