We've been regular customers of Avoca since it first opened and always enjoyed the experience. However, I'm really sorry and disappointed to say that having recently eaten in the restaurant with my family we discovered a hair under the food on one of our plates. This happened as we came to the end of our lunch and we were, believe it or not, reluctant to complain as we're such fans of Avoca and wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt.
As no-one came to check how we were enjoying our food, we waited until the waitress came to clear the plates. We explained about the hair (very noticeable as long and wavy) and nearly apologised ourselves for discovering it! Service is always outstanding in Avoca and the young girl was apologetic and rushed off. She returned with the coffee I ordered, saying 'this is on the house' as discreetly as possible and rushed off. We were surprised and dismayed by this response and expected more, with perhaps the manager coming to apologise. Needless to say we didn't remain in the restaurant, or make any fuss whatsoever as we thought 'what's the point?'. The opportunity they had to rectify our negative experience was definitely lost.
Such a shame. It's not exactly a cheap and cheerful restaurant, not that this would excuse this, and customers expect more. As our first negative experience of eating in Avoca, it's enough for us to feel very let down from somewhere that (we felt) was hard to match in Belfast.
I won't give a rating for food, service, value, etc as I feel it wouldn't give a fair overall representation. It was, hopefully, an isolated incident that we experienced.
