“Friendly!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

Well! This place simply has this, what you are looking for, if you are young and you don´t want to spend money. Rooms are very nice, full equipment, welcome cofee included. Shared bathroom with other 3-5 rooms, depends which part you are. Breakfast is on your choice - you can choos of 6-8 items, fresh, home-made. Stuff is so friendly, that you feel more like somewhere on barbecue by your friend. They recommend you where to go, what you have to see, where go for drunk in the evening and where to eat. They tell you, how you can meet Belfast in less traditional way than how you ussually do - only see city centre and that´s all. They want you see the best, not the best adverted. they call you taxi, provide you towell, just full service for you. So - staying there was just perfect and pretty cheap! Only when you don´t know how to get there from train - is better to have map and be ready for walk like 10-15 minutes, or you can take a cab.

Stayed here for one night in December for a gig at the Odyssey Arena. Stayed in a 4 person private room. Staff are very friendly, and the room was spacious and clean (had lockers too but they weren't needed), although there we only 2 plug sockets for 4 people. There was a toilet/shower just across from our room which was nothing special but it got the job done. The hostel itself is actually two old houses joined together and turned into a hostel so it's not exactly modern feeling and has a bit of an old creaky feeling but this isn't a huge issue.

Had a bit of an issue with the key code locks for the main entrance and the room itself, very finicky and hard to get right, especially if you come back late and it's pitch black so you can't even see the keys (perhaps a porch light for the main entrance would be a good idea?). I understand it's an old property and this is probably the best method for security but still an issue none the less.

The hallways and stairways are quite narrow and I suppose could be an issue if you have a lot of baggage etc but wasn't an issue in my case.

The free breakfast was excellent and they even gave a choice of several different options from egg on toast to a full English/Irish breakfast. The common room was nice and comfortable with a full projector/screen and a lot of DVD's to choose from. The kitchen/dining area was pretty small but never got overcrowded and this probably lends itself well to meeting other travelers. There was also a small terrace area out the back with a table and chairs for smokers.

I can't speak for social activities as I was only there for one night with friends for a concert but they do allow you to bring in your own alcohol and drink it in the common areas.

Location wise it's about a 10 minute walk from the main bus/train station in Belfast as well as many bars/pubs and places for nightlife so it's good in that regard also.

Overall a fine hostel and would recommend if you're up in Belfast.

I thought this place was great. Well priced and very friendly staff including Linda on reception and also Jo, who makes a very good (free!) cooked breakfast. I never leave reviews, even when I plan to, but this place was so good, I'd feel guilty not to. I've stayed in pricey hotels in Belfast that could probably learn a thing or 2 from the staff a Lagan Backpackers. I'd definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Everything ran smoothly. Nothing really to worry about. I'd go for a smaller room perhaps - mine...

Right away our group loved this hostel! The staff were so nice and friendly and the hostel itself was clean and within walking distance to everything in the city. The other people staying in the hostel were so nice as well and we all enjoyed a couple nights out together. Great place to stay, have a delicious free breakfast and meet people!

Before arriving at Lagan's we thought it very weird. The street in which it is located is basically all to let. There is no single building without a signal on it. Even thought it was summer, there was no one around to be seen, except some immigrant children. When we entered the building, the receptionist (Spanish girl who does not speak English fairly well, btw) warned us about the frequent car breaks on the street. Quite concerning, as they don't own a parking lot, but thankfully nothing hapenned.

When we arrived our room was not ready, although it was way past the check-in time, and they said it was being cleaned up. When they finally granted us access to the room, it looked like it hadn't seen a broom in ages! I was surprised they were "cleaning" it just before we arrived, for I could find papers, can locks, newspapers and even used swabs on the floor!

We were 4 ppl, so we got a room at the roof-floor. Literally. The roof is inclined and so tall people might have some trouble moving around.

The lockers are VERY noisy and rather small, so don't expect to lock all your luggage there. Mine, specifically, wasn't able to be closed at all, for some piece was missing.

The bathroom in front of our room was tiny and nasty! It seems like some ppl from the room next door live there and so they leave all their stuff at the bathroom. The trash cans are not emptied regularly and there is moss all around the shower and its walls.

Me and my mother shared a bunk bed, which is very comfortable, and with nice pillows. We didn't need blankets as it was summer, but they were there anyway.

The breakfast was a delightful surprise! There are 4 or 5 options you can choose, so there is a fair variety. And for the price we paid, I really didn't expect anything this good. I had a traditional Irish b-fast w/ beans, egg, sausages and toast. Yummy indeed. Coffee and tea ar ethere for you to make whenever you want.

Room Tip: If you're tall, don't go at the rooftop rooms!

The hostel is not far of the centre and easy to get by bus and car. The staff are very nice and helping people. Very good english breakfast. 14 pound a night. So it's a good place to stay.

Please note breakfast is strictly between 8 and 10 with no exceptions. All breakfast served only with coffee or tea. Lagan Backpackers is simply a large Belfast house that has been converted into a Backpackers Hostel; and it is owned and run by a South African guy who knows what backpackers want. Our high ratings are mostly due to the great attention and recommendations that you can expect from both myself and my staff. My idea for a great hostel is very simple: to make you feel at home. To give you a comfortable bed to sleep in, to keep the noise down after eleven to ensure a peaceful sleep and to make you feel so at home that you make new friends and enjoy Belfast as much as possible. We provide advice on all tours of Northern Ireland, and will only recommend tours that we have personally experienced. We advise that our customers do not pre-book tours before visiting as we find that some tour operators overcharge and do not provide the level of customer satisfaction that we expect for our guests. In addition to this, Lagan Backpackers hostel is very friendly to single travellers, as we go the extra mile to make sure you enjoy your stay. We are located minutes from the City Centre, the Lagan River and the picturesque Queens University campus; and mere moments away from the lively Botanic Avenue where there are many restaurants, shops, pubs and clubs for our customers to enjoy. Additionally, the Botanical Gardens that boast beautiful greenhouses and the famed Tropical Ravine is a short walk away, adjacent to the Ulster Museum. Our staff are friendly and eager to help with any enquiries our customers have about which places to visit in the area, the history of Belfast, or even just the best pub to enjoy a pint of Guinness. We are on hand to provide personal recommendations for popular tourist attractions and tours of Northern Ireland, and are more than happy to organise and book these tours for our guests. Lagan Backpackers has a very comfortable, relaxed atmosphere; as our main aim is to ensure our guests feel very much at home. We have full kitchen facilities and a cosy common area where people can eat, relax in front of the television or chat and make new friends. Free tea and coffee for our guests throughout the day. There are also laundry services available for a small fee. Wireless internet access available for a small fee. We look forward to having you stay with us at Lagan Backpackers, where we will make your experience of Belfast a truly memorable one. Bookings for same day as arrival will only be accepted up to 6pm.** Please be advised that although there is no curfew, non-hostel guests are not allowed upstairs. This is non-negotiable, as Lagan Backpackers needs to ensure the complete security and comfort of all of its guests. Reception is open until 11pm, however if you require a later check-in please contact us ** No groups, stag parties, hen parties or drunken weekends like Paddys day!! Please remember only for the 11,12,13,14 July I do not accept booking from people from the UK (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales..also no American or Canadian band members). This is only for the marching season. No refunds on deposits will be given and you will be turned away on arrival. No stag or hen parties or groups without prior permission. ... more   less
