“Stylish & Scrumptious - The Square!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013 via mobile

Had dinner with colleagues on a cold Friday night in January and we were served with great courtesy and attention. The set menu was excellent, as were the house wines. I was a bit awkward as I didn't want a dessert from the set menu and so I requested a little cheese. The waiter was most gracious and arrived with a delicious cheese board and no extra cost. What a lovely accomodating restaurant! I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant, which never fails to please.

“Snobbery and poor service alive and well”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

I booked a Hi Life meal for Saturday night. I had asked to be seated in the restaurant upstairs as opposed to the cafe downstairs. On arrival it was obvious there were many tables available upstairs but on requesting one of these (again) we were advised they were booked for later guests. From our seats downstairs it was obvious few other diners did in fact arrive. So, from our well isolated corner we waited an eternity for service. When we did eventually make contact with the missing staff, this proved difficult as we found it very difficult to understand the waiter who as well as having a accent difficult to understand, had a distinct air of superiority about him. In fact he seemed frustrated as us failing to understand him. Having made our choice of wine we were then told it was no longer available, an alternative was chosen. At this point we wished to order food as time was passing and a party of six or eight has just arrived upstairs. Given the pace of service we didnt wish to place our order behind this group (as would likely have occurred) We explained to the waiter we would like to order as we had plans to be somewhere else later. He jestured he would attend to us soon. What followed then was farcical in that he asked us to confirm we wanted both starters and mains to arrive at the same time as we were in such a hurry. This became increasingly embarrasing and uncomfortable in trying to explain we would like to simply place our order at that point and proceed with our evening. In time the mains arrived and were set down on the table with such force and lack of manners that some food fell off the plate onto the table. This was commented on by the waiter with a laugh and a throw away apology as he left.
Clearly with this restaurant there is an entirely different view and indeed service given to people who book a meal through the Hi Life diners scheme. To say there was a sense of being second class would be a major understatement. What should have been a pleasant evening was ruined from start to finish with an inverse snobbery from people who at the end of the day are serving food to paying customers.
In summary, the service was dibolical, the attitude of the staff stank, the food was very ordinary and thankfully I can report the accounting to total up the bill was as poor as everything else. Thankyou for the wine !!!

“Never disappoints”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

We eat here a couple of times a month and it never disappoints us. Staff are very welcoming and a good choice of food. Looking forward to the home made pies returning over the winter!

“Good Restaurant near downtown.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We ate at the Square Cafe with a group of about 30. They have two seating areas, upstairs and down and we filled up much of the upstairs. We were eating off a limited menu but the food was great. Service was outstanding, food arrived quickly and pretty much at the same time.
