“Super place. A gem!”
It was meant to be! We tried our two other favourites and they were closed on Tuesdays....so we picked Ginger and boy were we glad we did.
This is a real little surprise package tucked down a side street very close to the centre of Belfast...in fact it is to us in the centre. You have a choice of two dining areas with the open kitchen right in front as you enter. We had a (tight!) table to the right by the window.
Service was excellent...top notch. A very friendly, welcoming professional waiter who looked after us very well indeed.
The food? Excellent and terrific value for money. We have eaten in all the top restaurants in Belfast and this rates there with them. It is unpretentious with a good though not extensive menu. And why should it be as it had something for everyone. We choose twice cooked, delicious fall of the bone (leg) of duck. Crispy skin...tasty and served on an oriental flavoured veg. salad. The other started was squid served, as a welcome change, in bite size pieces and with a very light cornflour batter.
Mains of a fine super tender, fat free beef pie with a light as a feather pastry topping. I would, as a personal choice, like more root vegetables with the beef to flavour and act as a contrast and as a variation from the beef. There was nothing wrong with my French spicy sausages but they just weren't for me. They tasted a bit sharp/sour and anyway I always like fat thick sausages for anything but breakfast. I would look at these if I were chef as there are far better around.
All mains were served piping hot and this to me is big brownie points. (see my review for Gordon Ramsay at Powerscourt where the servings were cold. Cold food....one of my pet hates!!)
The dessert was delicious....pears in custard over champagne jelly and topped with mini meringues! Every last morsel devoured.
Very decent good value wine list, nicely laid out and explained.
We would recommend and will for sure be back next time up North!
