“Does what it says on the Tin”

Dragon Hotel

Jul 1, 2008

I chose the Dragon for it's location. I'm originally from Swansea and was at home for a wedding and as such wanted quick access to shops, restaurants and taxis.

I got exactly what I wanted. A clean room, a tad small maybe, a functional bathroom, decent TV (for the 30 seconds it was on).

We didn't eat at the hotel or use the bar or health club so I cant comment on those. I have eaten at the Brasserie on the ground floor in the past and found it decent however we didn't use it on this trip.

If it's a convenient location you need then the Dragon is it. Personally if I have need of a Hotel in Swansea again I'll try to get down to the Mumbles which is more of a leisure destination. If I had business in Swansea city center I'd stay at the Dragon every time.

Pros

Friendly Staff, Good Location, Clean Rooms, Reasonable price (4 nights £300).

Cons

The internal doors have little in the way of soundproofing and you can clearly hear conversations in the hallway and the progress of the maids in the morning. Getting a lie in past 9am isn't easy unless you are doped up on Valium.

Mondays at 10:30am are when they test their fire alarms, it scared the hell out of me. It would have been nice to be forewarned that a reenactment of the blitzkrieg was about to take place in my room.

The lifts are very small but it didn't prove to be an issue.

“Superb Staff”

I stayed at the Dragon on 8th and 9th June. My room (219) was very clean, comfortable and stylish with a contemporary theme. With an ample supply of brilliantly white, fluffy towels, the bathroom was spotlessly clean and a selection of toiletries provided.

The food served in the restaurant was probably the best I've enjoyed in a four star hotel - the homemade cheesecake is the lightest and most spectacular I've ever tasted.

The most exceptional service I've ever encountered was provided at breakfast by a lady by the name of Sandra. She chatted happily and called everyone by their name - a real treasure. Nothing was too much trouble for her.

Attention to detail in all aspects of my stay left me feeling that I'd been truly pampered - although I hadn't had time to experience the superb lesiure facilities. I will defiinitely stay at the Dragon again very soon.

I stayed here for two nights for business. When we arrived the car park was alittle small and stuggled to get a space, however there is a NCP near by which the hotel cover your cost for, only down side is they close it at 9pm so you won't have access to your car after then.

They checked us in within minutes and showed us where the rooms where. The room was adequate for what we needed them for, flat screen TV with a few cable channels, hair dryer, and tea making facilities. The bathroom was quite small, and it was a little noisey as my room was on the front near the road, but other than that it was fine.

Breakfast in the hotel was nice, they had a selection of 'fry up', fruits, cereal, yoghurts, and pastries, so plenty of choice. We had tea in the brasserie, which was really really nice. I had chicken caesar salad to start both nights (this was amazing!) and lamb the first night and asparagus the second, again both were really lovely. The only thing was that the menu was limited and it didnt differ either night we where there.

The staff was brillient, really friendly and proffesional! All in all it was a good stay and wouldn't be disappointed if I had to stay there again.

“Pleasant place to stay”

Dragon Hotel

May 6, 2008

It's a pleasant enough hotel in the centre of town. Modern with good quality fittings in the rooms. Nice pool and good staff. A couple of tips. Book a twin room. We booked a double and it was tiny. We changed for the second night to a twin and it was much larger. They wanted £13 for a breakfast. A short walk away is BHS who supplied one for £2.79 and a little further a Wetherspoons pub who gave a better one for £3.79.

“Seeing Red at the Dragon”

Dragon Hotel

May 5, 2008

Just minutes into my stay at the Dragon Hotel, Swansea, I was seeing red. I had booked a 2 night stay for 3 people in a superior family room but experienced a very inferior service.
It wasn't the perfunctory welcome that put me off, even though the receptionist rattled off hotel information machine-gun style without drawing breath; nor the tiny lifts, which despite purporting to hold 6 people could scarcely manage 2 with luggage. (If you're prone to claustrophobia, take the stairs). It's a mystery why a new hotel with an expansive soul-less lobby should consider 2 tiny lifts adequate but it pretty much summed up the rest of the stay....the place looks great but isn't designed with guests' interests in mind.

Before I go into a rant, just a few general comments about the hotel. It's very close to the pubs and clubs, hence extremely noisy at night. If the drunks making their merry way home don't keep you awake, the endless police sirens wailing through the night will. The soundproofing in the hotel itself isn't great either.

Of the Playstations which, according to the website, can be found in every room, there was no sign. On checking with reception they confirmed that these had been removed some time ago - shame they hadn't seen fit to satisfy their legal obligations by updating the website.

Breakfast was good and hot but tea served in insulated flasks is not really what you expect in a 4 star hotel particularly when the flasks have previously held coffee that lingers and obscures the taste of the tea. Breakfast is not included and at £13.95 quite expensive: those looking for a cheaper option may prefer a 3 minute stroll to BHS which has a variety of all day breakfasts eg 10 items for £2.99, including Sundays.

In short, the hotel may merit its 4 star rating on the basis of its facilities and decor...it's clean, bright and functional as befits a purpose built hotel but attitude to guests leaves a lot to be desired.

So now for the rant....! The red mist descended when, having booked a superior family room which looked great on the website, I discovered that I had been given a standard double. Machine gun girl tried to put the blame on me saying that I had only booked for 2 adults but based on the room rate, had to agree that I had in fact booked for 3 people. She then tried to persuade me I had been given a superior family room. Again, I had to convince her otherwise. The Duty Manager remembered his customer empathy training and made a few sympathetic noises but was totally ineffective. He didn't seem able to answer even the most basic question without first referring to someone else.

As there were no spare rooms and no spare beds available, we had to make do with the double room so my 15 year old son had to sleep on the floor. We were offered blankets which arrived in the form of a double duvet, half stuffed into a single duvet with the ends hanging out. It's really not that hard to fold a double duvet into a single cover!

The next morning, the Duty Manager seemed very pleased with himself when he told me we would be upgraded to a suite. In fact, we were moved to superior family room which was what I had booked in the first place - it was neither a suite nor an upgrade. As "a gesture of good will" our first night was charged at the double room rate but as this was what we'd actually stayed in, it wasn't exactly a gesture although we did get a free breakfast too. As I checked out, I noticed a pile of survey cards asking guests about their stay....strangely, I wasn't asked to complete one! We skipped breakfast on the second day preferring to get out as soon as we could, only to find our plans foiled by a coach that had parked across a line of cars blocking us in. A fitting end to an appalling stay...as they say, the Dragon - you're welcome to it!
