“Not quite as it seems”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

Just stayed here for one night. Booked it through Booking.com, and felt the pics and descriptions were misleading.
It is more like a large B&B , on a noisy main road. We were on the second floor room 10... Quite a trek if you had large bags, as no lift. Room was large and bedding clean. Bed comfort ok, but room smelt musty and hardly any light fittings worked. Toilet roll almost all gone , and no replacement in the room. Also this room is at the front of the property , very noisy traffic ..
Paid for the breakfast , but wish we hadn't . The lady serving was miserable, and the food was mediocre. Would not stay here again , and would not recommend it.

Room Tip: Just avoid going there ...

had a so called family room, with a double and a single, very small room with plaster falling off the walls, non working lights, a shower that had very poor pressure and the showertray did not drain properly, the breakfast was largely inedible, a real ripoff at £130, avoid at all costs

Room Tip: find a different hotel

I stayed in the Gateway for a visit to Cardiff with my parents for a 70th birthday. The walk to the train station was easy so the location was good. The receptionist was polite and we checked in easily. After that things went downhill! There was a rather damp smell to the hotel, my room had a funny smell to it and my parents room smelt of sick. The rooms were okay, but so many little details added up to an unpleasant stay. Some lights were hanging from the ceiling in the bathroom, my bedside lamp did not work, there were blood spots on my bedsheets and things were generally old and unclean. The hotel was also very noisy! I wouldn't stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the house separate to the main hotel (40) so the main hotel may be better?

I arrived late after a very long day and had to leave the hotel to eat but otherwise had a lovely quiet clean room with all necessary facilities left very early so I was unable to sample the breakfast but thanks fora good nights sleep

Basic guest house does the job with no thrills. Rooms were scruffy although en suite bathroom seemed brand new. Cost of £70 per night seemed to be pushing it for Newport.

Breakfast was large enough and very enjoyable.

Forget all the other reviews... The room was lovely but the lady on reception was awful. Didnt have a clue what she was doing! Really rude and zero customer service skills! This put us off from the moment we checked in! If i was the owner i'd change the staff and you would have a highly recommendable hotel.

Bit of a funny setup but our room was spotless. breakfast was hearty and good. Staff were helpful and friendly offeing advice on food late at night.Suggesting sit down carry out or delivery options. This hotel obviousley caters for travelling salesmen type. So very adequit for an overnight stay.Downside the room had bedside lights that did not work.

Room Tip: Staff are very knowlegable on the area.So ask them especially for food questions
