“Excellent meal in a quirky setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

I went to the Waterloo for a work colleagues leaving lunch and was very surprised at what we got. Having driven past the hotel many times I did not expect what was behind the doors. We had ordered ahead and so the owner was expecting our party of 8 at midday. Inside the decorations are quite olde-worlde with lots of train memorabilia. The food was cooked fresh and ready pretty much when we arrived. The manager /owner also seemed very friendly and helpful. I ordered the lasagne and it was very tasty and a decent portion size. Some of my colleagues had the club sandwich which looked like a speciality of the restaurant. The sandwich was massive served with large chunky chips which a few of our group struggled to finish it. The desert menu was not fantastic with around 5-6 choices. I had the Chocolate Brownie served with cream and it was nice, but probably not worth the money in hindsight and that leads me onto the only real downside of the meal - the cost. At around £15 per head for the two course meal it did represent great value for money in my eyes and maybe a lunchtime specials menu would have been worthwhile tooffer to customers in the future.

A pleasant lunchtime meal and another venue ticked off in Newport.

“evening meal great, breakfast rubbish!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

Been to the Waterloo several times in the past and have always enjoyed the food, even though the set menu has now disappeared which significantly increases the cost, This time on an evening out with my partner we again had a great night, good food, nice ambiance, although part of the restaurant was partitioned off, I assume due to lack of customers, we very much enjoyed the night.
HOWEVER if you choose to spend the night as we did on a meal and accommodation deal you must ensure two things; 1) Made sure you do not get a room facing the dual carriageway as you will be awake from about 5:30am when the traffic starts. 2) Don't even bother with the breakfast which was obviously made first thing and just left on a hot plate till you turn up, which is a great shame. The breakfast in the cafe opposite is however to be highly recommended and available all day:-)

The rooms themselves were starting to show signs of wear and tear, towels fraying, the windows were black and the room desperately needs a lick a paint.

In summary go for a great night out and get a taxi home afterwards!!!

“great atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2012

This is not your normal pub food, prices are high but the quality and quantity you get reflect this. If you are looking for somewhere special for birthdays anniversary this will be your place. Check out the menu before booking as it is limited, though there is a special boards.

“Nice food, shame about the owner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

Have ate here 3 times with a large group of people, the food has been lovely but the owner is down right rude! We dont drink alcohol and he obviously doenst like the fact we dont spend huge amounts of money on his drinks selection, on all 3 occasions he has been rude to my husband so much so we will not be returning (we usually come here as part of our local church).
