“Wonderful Pampering Stay at Cardiff Park Plaza”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2007

My husband and I recently stayed at Cardiff Park Plaza the night before we travelled to our honeymoon destination. We booked well in advance so got a good deal with breakfast included.

Staff were very friendly and obliging, including the excellent porter, "Jimmy." The resteraunt was clean and sophisticated, and breakfast was delicious with a huge amount of choice. We opted for the less healthy, but more tasty, full english breakfast. The coffee was piping hot and toast freshly provided.

We were very impressed with the room: high ceilings, clean modern interior, all the "mod cons" such as wifi, wide screen TV, huge comfortable bed, low level lighting, large ensuite with plenty of good towels... I could go on!

We thoroughly recommend the Park Plaza to you!

  • Liked — Stylish Interior, Excellent Porter
  • Disliked — The express checkout wasn't as express as we had thought, but we will know next time!

I can copy most other people's reviews of this place. Stayed here over the holiday weekend and the biggest issue was the noise from the pubs directly across the street. I didn't realize this when I booked so I asked if they had any rooms on the other side. They did for an extra £25 per night. So I paid it, they found us a room and it was nice and quiet. I should point out the staff were very good in our experience (I know other reviewers weren't so impressed). My main and biggest complaint were the beds. They were obviously quite new and completely rock hard! I mean it's not a cheap hotel, the fittings and furnishings are of high quality, why do they always go for the crap beds?! The staff did try and help by putting a 2nd duvet as a mattress topper and this improved things a bit. The breakfast buffet was very good. They've got a well supplied gym too. Just be aware of the beds!

As other reviewers have mentioned, the communal areas and bedrooms here are stylishly decorated (albeit by Boutique Hotels R Us). Food in the restaurant is good although not cheap and service was excruciatingly slow even on a quiet night. There's a nice pool and spa.
What lets it down is the location: There's a camera'ed, rigorously-policed bus lane right in front of the hotel that prevents you stopping to unload passengers or luggage. Worse still is the row of tacky bars across the street - screeching karaoke singers kept going until nearly 2am (on a Sunday night!) when honking taxi drivers and shouting neds took over. About 6am, buses start parking up immediately outside the hotel with their engines rumbling away.
It's a nice hotel that deserves to succeed - but get a room on a higher floor.

Not exactly cheap, but you do get what you pay for in this case.

Trendy minimalist decor, spacious rooms, very large beds, quality pillows and sheets, good specification bathrooms, in-room digital safe, large LCD TV, reasonable storage, Air-Con that works, good breakfast including hot choices, efficient staff.

A good city location very near to the castle by foot (do take a tour of the house within the castle grounds if you like architecture and decor). Also near many shops, malls, a Theatre and Curry House. A 10-15 minute walk from the Central Station and the bus terminal.

The only negative aspect is that across the road from the Hotel are several pubs and some disco/clubs which attract hundreds of scantly clad young females and hormone fuelled young men who generate much noise of a Friday and Saturday evenings, well into the early hours. The hotels double glazing keeps much of this out, but not all.

A nearby bus called ‘Baycar’ will take you to Cardiff Bay every 15 minutes for £1.50p return. Don’t forget Cardiff is home of Dr. Who and Torchwood.

Take a Taxi or Bus (32 from the central Bus station) to St. Fagan's Open Air Museum of Welsh Life, which is 4 miles outside the city. Allow 5-6 hours, it's simply excellent and free.

  • Liked — Good location, high standards of accomodation and service.
  • Disliked — Cheaper rates would always be nice, but I did get what I paid for.

Well, for a short stay, it was briliantly positioned. Running parallel to the main shopping area, it was literally 2mins to town, 2mins to castle, 2mins to everything!! extremely handy.

problems with reservations. having booked an executive double suite, we were shown to our room, which turned out to be a basic twin room. After a bit of a debate with the indifferent staff, they offered us an upgrade. Eventually, (after another stop at an unclean room...a used razor or blade of some sort lying in the bathroom!!) we got another room, which was beautiful. We couldnt complain at all. It was spacious and clean and very comfortable.

The staff were not as friendly as I had expected them to be with all the reviews championing them. They may have been giving us a wide burth due to our less-than-satisfactory start.

It didnt spoil our break, however, and the hotel, once kinks were straightened out, was lovely.
However, I'd imagine such a modern unusually decorated hotel will date quickly.

Stayed at the Plaza for a few days over the bank holiday weekend.
The staff and hotel were excellent and the restaurant superb.
The rooms are quite large and minamalist in decor, as is the rest of the hotel.
My family also used the indoor swimming pool and steam room which was free for residents.
The only small niggle i had, and its not the hotel's fault, the rooms facing the front get a little noisy from the clubs situated on the other side of the road. We were on the first floor so maybe a higher room would help.

Simply one of the best Hotels I've stayed in. The single room was massive, very clean C/W a double bed and flat screen TV. The room also had a nice shower/bath. The bar at the Plaza was excellent as well.

My only gripe (there had to be one) was the noise in the hotel in the morning (due to the water-system perhaps?). Not too bad I guess...and it certainly saved setting my alarm clock :)

Highly recommended!
