“Excellent, as always.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2011

Great hotel in a fantastic location. The rooms are clean, spacious and tidy. The staff are some of the best I've come into contact with, at any hotel. Great value and the breakfast is pretty good too.

Parking spaces are a bit of a lottery but there is a multi-storey a hop, skip and a jump away.

We stay here several times a year - no longer bother with the Marriott, Hilton, etc.

Despite asking for a quiet room in our original booking, we were given one on the first floor with (not very effective) secondary double glazing opposite a bar and a disco. We asked for a quieter room, and were given 108, which overlooks the car park. This is surrounded by large, noisy ventilation systems for the hotel and the restaurant next door. However, this noise was all but drowned out by the hotel plumbing, which all seemed to be routed through the ceiling of the room, and which occasionally made loud shrieking noises in the middle of the night. We wouldn't have slept at all if we hadn't brought industrial-grade earplugs. On top of that, lots of light leaked in around the room door and through the thin curtains (blackout linings are surely a minimum in a supposedly 4* hotel). After a short night of broken sleep, you then discover that the shower is designed in such a way that it's almost impossible to use it without flooding the bathroom and hallway, and that you can't sit on the toilet without impaling yourself on the badly-positioned toilet roll holder! However, we should point out that we often stay in Thistle hotels, and we've always found them satisfactory until now.

Nice old building, teastefully re-furbished.
Twin room very small indeed, backed onto carpark (no real issue with that) but kept awake by noise from a reception - as others have said why not place guests from said events in bedrooms near function rooms ??
Breakfast excellent - service and food quality top notch.
Reception staff very good too.
Location for the centre of Cardiff just couldnt be bettered and for that I would rate if a definate 4*.

Went to a concert with my Mum so decided to make the most of it, stay over and go shopping. Got the train there and back but there is parking available on a first come first serve basis. We went on a Wednesday and the car park was half empty by around 6pm.

We had a twin room and it cost £69 bed and breakfast... modern, spacious and honestly couldnt fault it. Only thing but you will get with all city centre hotels, a group of people came back real late, making quite a bit of noise but apart from that no other problems.

Breakfast was really nice and a good choice. Fruit, cereal/yogurt, danish pastries and a full english which were all self serve. There was an additional menu ie eggs and smoked salmon etc with there was an additional charge.

I would book here again if I was in the area and wouldnt be in 2 minds with this hotel.

NOTE: we did walk by a double room while it was being cleaned and it did seem quite a bit smaller than ours. it may have been that actual room but I would be inclined to order twin and put the beds together to make a king!

This is a good hotel in an excellent location smack in the middle of cardiff. I stayed here with my partner as I was visiting a local restaurant and didn't want the fuss of travelling home afterwards. Unfortunately I chose to stay on the same night that the Welsh Conservative Party Conference was being held, and with a wedding also being staged there it was very busy. I was allocated a spacious room which was clean and with a massive big bed. Thats where the good points ended..... The room was right next to the wedding venue and a disc was blasting until 1.30 a.m. The reservations desk would have been better allocating the room to one of the wedding guests as they would have been happy to go to bed when the wedding ended. The room also looked out onto a batch of air conditioning units which hummed all night. This didn't really bther me though as I didn't want a view of any sort. I returned to the hotel at midnight and decided to have a drink until the disco music died down. The bar was full with the conference guests, and the harassed bar staff were dismissive of me and even served non-residents with drinks before telling me I couldn't have adrink as the bar was closed! After complaining they eventually served me. I talked to the manager about the noise and the service when I checked out of he hotel, and had a full apology which I was happy with. I understand that when venues are full and staff are under pressure they may not perform well, but I expect the same level of courtesy and service as any other paying guest would have. I would recommend this hotel, and would even use it again due to it's facilites and location, but I would first check that it wasn't holding events which would detract from the service I receive!

Paid £49 for a double room direct through the Thistle hotel website on the day. Fantastic value. Modern room, clean, well maintained, seemed almost new, kingsize bed. Was really impressed. The location is great if you are going out in the centre of Cardiff. Parking was a bit of a problem, had to use expensive NCP nearby but that tends to be the same situation with most city centre hotels in most cities now. Didn't eat or drink there, but would highly recommend based on location, price and standard of room.
