“OK breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

Had breakfast there on a Sunday morning. It was not very crowded and I placed our order at the bar and the drinks and food are served to the table. It took about 20 minutes for the teas to arrive and about another 10 minutes for the food to arrive. I had to ask the waitress to wipe the (dirty) table. She would have put the cups on the table. I ordered Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon. The eggs were perfectly cooked but the muffin was barely toasted and the hollandaise sauce definitely from a jar. The toast with the full English breakfast was also barely toasted. The tea came in glass cups which I find strange for a traditional cuppa. We had one regular and one large tea - different size cups but one tea bag floating in each cup. There are so many places to go for a really good breakfast that I probably wouldn't go back and although the waitress behind the bar who took the order was nice and smiley, the service waitress didn't look happy about working on Sunday morning!

“Dragged down by very poor service (average food)”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012 via mobile

The service is regularly poor. Two people cleaning glasses, and serving other employees, while one struggles to deal with all the paying customers. Seriously guys, basics.

“Great atmosphere terrible service!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012 via mobile

Great atmosphere. Terrible service. Waited for 15minutes while 2 people "looked busy" behind the bar while one person struggled to deal with the cue. Very disappointed.

“Fav place in cardiff”

I have been to the pear tree several times and every time it has been lovely. The food is simple but delicious. There is a good, relaxing and welcome atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

“Not quite as good as it looks”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

The Pear Tree is a new-ish, Brains-owned makeover of a former Aussie-style pub, which combines a bar, restaurant and coffee-house. It has an appealing style with nooks and corners, chalked-up menus, piles of books and games (in fact it's suspiciously similar to the Juno Lounge, just a few doors away on Wellfield Road). All in all, a nice environment to while away a couple of hours.
It's a shame that, on my visits, there have been a few issues which - as other reviewers have said - let it down a bit. Food is, on the whole, ok but not great. Your best bet is the tapas, or the sharing platters which are similar to those at the sister enterprise the Grape and Olive on Wedal Road. It makes a nice combination to share amongst a group. But other food isn't particularly special; on my last visit I had a lamb kofta flatbread which was all flatbread, two tiny koftas (a tapas-sized portion, in fact). Chips are mass-produced, uninteresting skinny fries. Disappointingly, coffee was also not great - even though this is a Costa franchise, Americano was too weak with no crema.
The other problem is with the service, which is certainly friendly but there never seem to be enough staff - so there is always a queue at the bar, and a long wait even for basic food. It's a shame, because it has the potential to be a really good neighbourhood restaurant/bar; mind you, it's often full at the weekend, so perhaps the owners just don't have the incentive to sort it out.
