“Fairy tale castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2014

This is a real fairy tale castle sited on the hillside amongst the wild garlic and bluebells with turrets, conical roof, drawbridge, and all that you could ask of any castle as well. Also there are some lovely woodland walks in the vicinity. The painting and decoration inside some of the rooms is quite amazing - don't miss it!

“The Fairy Castle in the woods......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

Castell Coch is defintiely worth a visit if you are visiting Wales. It is approx half an hour from the centre of Cardiff, and much easier to visit if you have your own transport. It is accessible from the M4, or the A470and is situated in the village of Tongwynlais.Public transport (buses) are on this route,no.132 Cardiff -Tongwynlais but it will take a little longer!! Another route is to Travel from the centre of Cardiff through Llandaff and the village of Radyr, you can actually see Castell Coch on the hill nestled amongst the forest.
The grounds are well kept, a steep hill from the entrance of the grounds to Castell Coch, with disabled parking at the top of the hill . There is sufficent parking area, but on a weekend/sunny day.can become very busy. Parking is free

Entrance prices are reasonable,family tickets,children under 5 free,disabled and carer/friend free..
A half day visit was fine for us,as this was a re visit, the castle isn't very big. It was built in 1890 as a retreat for the third Marquis of Bute. . The Drawing Room is beautiful, scenes from Aesop's fables on the walls, and wood carvings decorated with gold leaf. ..a must to see on your visit.
There are numerous stone steps from the courtyard to the Drawing room, kitchen and.some of the staircases are very narrow .
The cafe is small, with a selection of cakes, and snacks. The grounds are so beautiful it's an ideal picnic spot, there are picnic tables.
It is a perfect place to get away from the city, the woods are just wonderful with varying walks /just so peaceful,
Just a 10-15 min walk from the castle is the local pub in the village.

The only negative experience for us on our visit was the scaffolding that was being erected on that day, other than that a visit to Castell Coch is unique.

“Worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2013

I took some friends here when we were staying in Cardiff and they were very impressed. Many other reviewers have described it as a "fairy tale castle", and I would agree. Definitely worth visiting as I've never seen a castle like this before.
