I was in Cardiff in the pouring rain. I had no umbrella. I was hungry. I essentially dashed into the first place I could see that served food. So it was that I found myself in O'Neill's, Cardiff.
The pub is quite large, although the tables all appear to be set-up for large groups so I felt slightly silly sitting there. The drinks are well-priced, as you'd expect. The food is also temptingly low-priced.
However, there were two key things that ruined my experience and will ensure I never return.
1.) The bar and waiting staff were not actively rude but hardly friendly either. I was treated as quite an inconvenience. The barmaid was more concerned with chatting with her friend across the bar and the waiting staff slammed by food on the table with such a force as to suggest I'd offended.
2.) I order the crockpot, which, to be frank, was a crock of the proverbial. It looked like a collection of everyone's leftovers from the previous day. I know it is only £3.95, and perhaps you can't complain, but that and the service ensured I was not happy.
There is a similar-sort of chain pub across the road. I'd advise potential patrons to go there.
